Author Interview: Donna Grant (And Highland Giveaway!) Back to Blog

Update: The winner of Shadow Highlander is…Marjana. Congratulations!!

I love Donna Grant. Not only is she a fabulous author, but she’s an all-around great person.  So when I had the chance to interview her for my blog party, I was excited. 🙂 Hope you enjoy the interview, too!

C: Hi, Donna! Thanks so much for being here with us (and congrats on the release of Shadow Highlander!).

D: Thanks, Cynthia!  I’m always delighted to be on your blog. 🙂

C: SHADOW HIGHLANDER is the 5th book in your Dark Sword series.  How did you originally get the idea for this series?

D: It all began because I knew I wanted to write a series.  I wanted it set in medieval Scotland.  And I knew I wanted it to have some kind of paranormal aspect.  But the true idea came while our family was watching the movie King Arthur and my daughter asked if that’s really how Rome left Britain.

The idea literally just struck.  What if the real reason Rome left Britain has been hidden?  What if it involved magic.  The next thing I knew I had developed my own mythology involving Druids (both good and evil) as well as immortal Highlanders with primeval gods locked inside them which were drug up from Hell by the Druids.

C: How has the series changed since book 1?  And did you plan the series in advance or did the stories develop as you wrote each book?

D: Yes and no.  There is still one major villain, and she’s almost impossible to kill because of the strength of her magic.  I had planned for at least ten books in the series, so I knew the overall arc of the story had to be able to carry it through.  But so much happens in upcoming books that does change so much more than I anticipated.  🙂

C: Do you have a favorite hero from your Dark Sword books?

D: My favorites are usually whichever hero I’m writing at the moment, but there are others who I’m dying to write their story.  Hayden (UNTAMED HIGHLANDER) was one of those.  But there are two coming up that I’m just beside myself waiting to get to them – Phelan and Malcolm.

C: Galen, the hero from SHADOW HIGHLANDER, has mind-reading gifts (oh, very handy!). Do you wish you could read minds? Or is there another psychic power you’d prefer to have?

D: No, I think it would be better for everyone if I couldn’t read their minds.  lol.  Not something I’d want.  If I could have any of the other powers my Highlanders have it’d have to be Fallon’s ability to teleport from place to place.  No more planes, baby!  😀

C: What’s next for you, Donna? What can readers expect?

D: Next up is Broc’s book (DARKEST HIGHLANDER) which releases January 31, 2012.

Then the spin off series, Dark Warriors with two sets of back to back releases in 2012

MIDNIGHT’S MASTER (Logan) – June 2012

MIDNIGHT’S LOVER (Ian) July 2012

MIDNIGHT’S SEDUCTION (Camdyn) November 2012

MIDNIGHT’S WARRIOR (Ramsey) December 2012

With more hunky Highlanders to come. 🙂

Oh, sweet, I am very glad there are more hunky Highlanders to come!! So…in honor of those highlanders, let’s do  a giveaway! Want to win a copy of SHADOW HIGHLANDER?  Then tell us which psychic power you’d like to have.

The Dark Sword series captures all the power, passion, and magic of Scotland’s legendary warriors—sworn to fight for victory, in battle and in love…

Sent on a dangerous mission into the shadowy world of the Druids, Galen must find a powerful ancient relic to defeat the enemies of MacLeod Castle. But what he discovers is far more powerful—and far more dangerous. A Druid lass whose beauty is as spellbinding as any magic…

Reaghan is the most enchanting woman Galen has even met—and the most enigmatic. She alone is immune to his mind-reading gifts. He alone makes her feel safe and secure. But Reaghan holds a secret power deep inside her that could destroy them both. And if Galen hopes to hold this captivating woman in his arms every night, he must defeat the darkness that draws closer around her every day…

  2. Viki says:

I’d like to control people. It would be so nice to have the hubs or the boys do what they’re asked when I ask them :). Other than that I think I’d like to be able to cure people with just a touch or a thought.

  3. Raonaid Luckwell says:

No need to enter me in this one since I have a copy..

That’s a very interesting question and each day it changes as I find new powers that makes me go “Oooh that would be neat to have.”

  4. Diane Sadler says:

I would love to be able to read people’s minds so long as there an of switch too!

  8. Hilleary Peterson says:

The ability to manipulate time, both faster and slower. Get through bad days faster and draw out the good days like weekends. That would be nice

  9. Two of my favorite authors coming together! How awesome! Thanks for the great interview and giveaway. If I could have any ability I’d live to read minds

  10. Ren says:

  11. Khelsey says:

I would like to read peoples minds

  12. Yadira A. says:

Looks good to me:) CONGRATS Donna on the latest release!

If I had a psychic talent it would be telekinesis! Recently read a story where the heroine had that ability and I can definitely see how it came in handy.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  13. Wendy Gregory says:

I would like to be a mind reader or telekinetic.

  14. rogier says:

I would love to be able to read people’s minds so long as there an of switch too! and controlling a element or nature

  15. Judi S says:

I’m going to have to agree with Donna that teleporting so we don’t have to use airplanes would be my power of choice as well. 🙂 Although having the power to control objects would be really cool too.

  16. Jahaira Trinidad-Deleve says:

I would like to teleport and be able to go anywhere I wanted with just a thought….Not sure if reading minds would be for me, do you really want to know what everyone is thinking….

  17. Def want to read minds or feel emotions- I may go crazy eventually from it- but imagine all the fun you could have until that happened LOL

  18. Janette Derucki says:

I agree with Donna; I don’t really want to be able to read anyone’s mind. I would however like the power of persuasion, to be able to convince them to do whatever I want with merely a mental suggestion. That could come in really handy sometimes.

  19. I would love to be able to see the future… only about a week in the future though. I’d love to be able to actually make a few bucks on the stock market. I’d keep it under the radar and only earn enough to live on.

  22. Betty Lewis says:

I would love to be able to travel through time, but only if I could go where and when I wanted. So I guess that would be like a teleport/time-travel ability, really. Some of the things I could go see would be SO awesome!!

  23. Ashley says:

Woot I cant wait to read this book. The power i would pick would be control over water.

  35. melanie Adkins says:

You are going to think I’m as nuts as they come, but psychics run in my family. So do other “abilities”. It’s usually just the females on my mother’s side. I help people cross over to the other side. My son is one of the few males who has abilities. His is being able to read a person extremely well. Although my psychic ability comes and goes I do have a bit of it.

I’d love to read this book.

  36. Colleen says:

psychic power… to be able to talk to animals… see what they are thinking and what they have to say!

  37. charlotte says:

I haven’t read your books yet, but it looks like a series I would like. I would like the power to move objects. There are times when reading minds would be good , but most of the time you would be better off not knowing.

  38. Cynthia Eden says:

Thanks for answering my questions, Donna! And for writing such great tales!

  39. Donna Grant says:

Thanks for the wonderful comments, everyone. I love reading what kind of power people would pick. We could really get into all sorts of trouble with them though. 🙂

Melanie – how neat that it runs in your family. I bet the stories you could tell us. 😀

  40. Na says:

I would want the psychic power to detect lies. That would come in handy when saving the world or hearts 😉

  41. Sherie says:

I think reading minds would be amazing. Especially what is going on in my husbands head. Then I won’t have to guess what he truly wants when all he replys is I Don’t Care!

  42. Lisa B says:

i think i’d like to control people with the sound of my voice. Sounds like fun huh? lol

    Lisa B
