30 Days of Demons, Day 6: Time to Fight Back to Blog

Update: The winner of the autographed copy of MIDNIGHT SINS is…commneter, #30, Rebecca Jean! Congrats, Rebecca! And thanks to everyone for the comments!

It’s Saturday, so that mean it’s time for an excerpt. This week’s focus is on a fight scene, and, since I am in the midst of my demon month, I thought I’d share a fight excerpt featuring one of my demons.  The excerpt below is from MIDNIGHT SINS (my heroine is a demon in this book) and, as you’ll see, when a succubus fights, well, the method of attack might not quite be what you’re used to seeing.

Today I’ll give away an autographed copy of MIDNIGHT SINS to a commenter. So if you haven’t read this book yet, well, here’s your chance for a free copy!  Just leave me a comment to be entered in the drawing. Tell me, what’s the most incredible fight you’ve ever seen/read about?

Well, damn if her day didn’t just suck.

She’d been watching the rumpled human male with half an eye, her mind on the murders, when the guy suddenly lunged for the desk on the far left.

He’d come up with a gun and every cop in the area had frozen.

Now he had a too-tight grip on her arm. The scent of fear and unwashed skin flooded her nostrils.

The barrel of the gun came dangerously close to her face. No, not a damn good day.

“Stay back or I’ll fucking kill her!”

The arm he’d looped around her neck tightened.

From the corner of her eye, she saw Todd. He was advancing on the man, on them, eyes narrowed, face hard with rage. He had his gun out. Cara realized if she didn’t do something, fast, her day was about to go from bad to sheer hell.

Because she sure wasn’t just going to stand there, be strangled, threatened, and then watch her cop get hurt.

Not when she could so easily stop the jerk who held her. Todd might not like the methods she was about to use, but there wasn’t much of an option.

Besides, perhaps it was time for him to see that she truly wasn’t the helpless damsel that he thought she was.

“I goin’ out of here, and I’m takin’ this bitch with me!” The guy snarled, spittle flying from his mouth.

Her hands lifted, yanked on the arm and freed her throat. “No,” she told him softly, “you’re not.” Breathing deeply, she dropped her control and let her pheromones fill the air.

The guy was so close to her that he got a direct hit. He spun her around to face him, eyes wide, mouth open.

She smiled at him. Pitched her voice low and poured on the compulsion as she said, “Kiss me.”

The gun hit the floor with a clatter as he locked his lips on hers. The air pulsed with his sexual energy. It was an energy much darker than Todd’s. And weaker. So much weaker.

But energy was energy—and the little bastard had threatened her.

So she’d take a bit of his power for herself.

Asshole.

Her hand rose. Touched his chest, and, with her kiss and touch, she pulled the man’s lust and power right out of him.

The sweet rush heated her blood. Oh, but it had been so long since she’d just let herself go. Just let herself take and take and take.

His body trembled against hers. A strangled moan bubbled in his throat and the heart that thumped beneath her hand began to slow.

Then to skip beats.

She pulled her mouth from his. Watched his bleary green eyes drift closed.

And then man fell backward, landing on the floor with a thud.

Cara inhaled deeply and caught the power still floating in the air. A faint shine lit her skin.

Sweet, sweet power.

Her head turned. She saw the stares then. The slack expressions on many of the male officers’ faces. Her gaze darted past them, caught sight of—

Smith. The ME stood near the elevator, hands fisted, mouth open, and eyes wide with horror.

Just great.

And a few feet away from Smith stood—

Another woman. A redhead. She waited between two cops, just a little past Smith. She stared right back at Cara. Not with the horror that Smith had, but with a kind of stark curiosity on her face.

As she focused on the woman’s face, the flare of her hunger and rage began to fade, and reality slowly raised its head.

Hell. But there was no going back now.

“What the fuck were you doing?” The roar came from Todd as he grabbed the gun, then secured the weapon. He caught her arms, pulling her close to him. “Cara?”

She blinked. Forced herself to meet his dark stare. Anger. No, fury. Jealousy.

Fear?

She could see it all. Swirling in those eyes. She could feel the emotions beating at her. “This is who I am.” Gyth was on the floor next to the still man, checking for a pulse. “I told you, I can take care of myself.” And punish those who threatened her.

Have fun celebrating. I can’t think of any particular fight right at this moment, but I know I love all your books and can’t wait for your next one. Hope there’s a good fight scene in it too.

  2. Tamsyn T. says:

Wow, that’s one way to fight! I haven’t read Midnight Sins yet and would love to win a copy! The most incredible fight I’ve seen is in the trademark fight scene in the movie Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon where Ziyi Zhang (Green Destiny sword wielder) duels with Michelle Yeoh. Great fight between two women!:o)Tamsyn

  3. Karen H in NC says:

I am a big fan of ‘Alias’ and Sydney Bristol was always in fights with someone. But one fight scene that I loved took place in a Beverly Hills boutique with Sydney and her arch enemy, Anna Espinosa duking it out, wiping out the security guard and, in general, wrecking the place. In the end, with Anna on the floor, Syd walked out saying: ‘She can have the blouse’. Love that line!

  4. Raelena says:

I would love to read this book! Fight Club when Ed Norton beats himself up…that was pretty crazy.

  5. There are so many awesome fight scenes! The Fight Club scene that has already been mentioned is one, as well as the fight scene between Jackie Chan and Jet Li in The Forbidden Kingdom. That’s all I’ll name or I might keep going awhile lol.

  6. Cheryl S. says:

The most incredible fights I’ve seen have been those at the end of each “Highlander” TV episode where someone loses his head!

  7. Michele says:

Happy Birthday Cynthia!!! Hope you have an awesome day with your family and friends 😀

Gosh, fight scene, hmmmm…the most intense fight scene that keeps coming to mind would have to be when Maya, Adam and Lucus took on Nassor in IMMORTAL DANGER 🙂

  8. Minna says:

    Sounds like a great book!

  9. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Incredible fight scenes? Well I can tell you that RA Salvatore has some awesome fight scenes with his Drizzt books but then that’s fantasy.

  10. Eva S says:

I love snippet saturday! The most recent fight scene that has stuck with me is from Ilona Andrews Magic Strikes book…all the gladiator style matches.

  14. Bree says:

Woohoo! I love a woman who can take care of herself. And I really do like succubus heroines, too. Loved this scene.

  15. Jean P says:

Can’t say I have any favorite fight scenes, none that come to mind right now.
    Loved the excerpt

  16. oooh, that was a great snippet!!!

As far as fight scenes go, I don’t have one in particular, but I do LOVE to watch UFC fights. Which is so antitypical of me that anyone who knows me would NEVER guess that I like to watch them.

I started to watch them after reading Lori Foster’s Causing Havoc (1st book in her Fighter series), and have been hooked ever since. The intensity, skill…scantilly clad buff bodies…don’t know exactly what it is that draws me to it, but it is the only fighter sport on tv that I will watch, for some reason everything else seems so brutal.

  17. Jody F. says:

My favorite fight scene is Uma Thurman and Vivica A. Fox in Kill Bill. It was funny and bloody at the same time.

I also agree with the other commenter who likes Alias. They had great fight scenes while wearing great clothes.

  18. bridget3420 says:

I love the fight scenes in Rush Hour 3. That movie’s hilarious!

Great excerpt. I loved the fight scenes in Underworld. They all just looked so good.

  20. Barbara Elness says:

I can’t think of a particular fight scene, but I always love it when a woman uses her skills to defeat someone who is trying to hurt her. I loved your excerpt, that was a unique fight scene. Have a Happy Birthday too.

  21. danni says:

I love the fight scenes in the X-men series. Great excerpt for Midnight Sins, very unusual but effective fighting style.

  22. Jane says:

One of the best fight scenes I’ve seen was the one between Hector and Achilles in “Troy.”

  23. Chris Roberts says:

Best fight scene belongs to the move 300.

  24. Alexa says:

The best fight scene I’ve ever seen would have to be in Kill Bill.

I agree with Karen about Alias. We’ve had a series marathon going on this past week at our house, and her fight scenes are amazing.

  28. The excerpt, definitely a different sort of fight scene, I like it!

One of the best fight scenes is Ziyi Zhang fighting Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and another, the fight scene in the hallway in the movie Old Boy.

  29. Rebecca Jean says:

A fight broke out on campus when I was in undergrad – it happened in the oval and there was blood everywhere. Apparently The gys were friends but were secretly sleeping with each others sisters, or some such nonsense. The cops had to come to break the fight up though and they both left in ambulances . . . yikes

  30. delitealex says:

My favorite fight scene is in kill bill vol 1 when uma thurman and vivica fox were fighting in the kithen I think. great excerpt.

  31. Amy S. says:

My fave fight scenes would be The Rock in Walking Tall.

  32. stacey smith says:

  33. Brandy says:

I liked the fight scenes in UltraViolet. There’s something about a woman kicking butt that makes you feel proud to be female. *G*
Happy Birthday to whoever’s it is! *G*

  34. Pamk says:

have fun celebrating. Love this book. don’t enter me in this contest. I already have this one.

  35. Rena M. says:

One of my favorite fight scenes is in the first Transporter movie. When they are in the warehouse and Jason Statham covers his self in oil so that the bad guys can’t age a grip on him. I just love that whole scene!

  36. The one between a bride and groom on their wedding night here in Western PA. Amazing….

  37. Kimberly B. says:

I don’t really like fight scenes, and in fact once when some guys were fighting to defend our honor, my best friend and I just left. However, in the series 2 premiere of the show Torchwood, there’s a really sexy bar fight between Captain Jack Harkness and Captain John Hart, who were previously lovers. Really hot!

  38. Hope you had a fun day. Thanks for sharing the insert. I can’t wait to read this book. The more I see the more I want it.

  39. Beth aka The Warrior says:

In Chapter one of “Donovan” part of Sarah McCarty’s Running Wild has a kickass scene:)

Several years ago there was a fight at a Shoney’s in town that actually made the newspaper!:D

  40. There are many awesome fight scenes I’ve seen in movies. Most are mentioned above. And then there are the ones in books as well, so many awesome ones. Especially as reality is suspended on those pages with the preternatural at the helm of most. But for me, real life kind of wakes me up. Makes me aware that fighting isn’t always in the ring or even fair. Once, on a bus, I saw the worst fight I’ve ever seen. So bad one guy knocked the window out of the frame and into traffic while the bus was driving through traffic. The window landed on some passing car’s hood who swerved and hit another car. I believe there was a pile up of cars (No one hurt seriously thankfully) but to be honest my attention had been on the window still and the guy hanging upside down out of it. The heel of his shoe caught on the broken window frame was the only thing that kept him from hitting the street off a moving bus. His other pal noticed him hanging and managed to grab his foot and pull him back in somehow even as the fight raged on. Horrible fight.
