It’s Day 1 here at the Month of Monsters event, and today’s guest is the always awesome…Vivi Anna!!! Welcome, Vivi! Thanks for kicking off the party! π

Halloween is just around the corner. I love Halloween. I love getting dressed up and panhandling for candy. The more the better. Rockets are my favorites. I also like the mini chocolate bars.
What I also like about Halloween is the penchant to watch scary movies. Being scared kicks up our adrenaline and it can be like a rush. I like scary movies. Not the gross out gory ones of today, like Saw or Hostel, hated both of those. I donβt want to lose my lunch I want to be scared and creeped out. I like the older horror movies. But my favorite horror movies of all time are the ones that are cool and sexy with young actors and a kickinβ soundtrack.
Here are my top ten favorite horror flicks.
1. The Faculty
2. Cursed
3. The Lost Boys
4. Dracula 2000
5. The Craft
6. 28 Days Later
7. Shaun of the Dead
8. The Covenant
9. Blade III
10. Vampires
And these are the top 10 rated horror movies from the International Movie Database.
1. Psycho (1960)
2. Alien (1979)
3. The Shining (1980)
4. Aliens (1986)
5. Les diaboliques (1955)
6. The Thing (1982)
7. King Kong (1933)
8. Frankenstein (1931)
9. Lat den ratte Kommain (2008)
10. Rosemaryβs Baby (1968)
You see old school horror is way cooler than the gross out gore fests of today. At least in my opinion.
What do you think? Old school creepy horror, or slasher gross outs? Which are your favorite?
Also whatβs your favorite Halloween candy?
One lucky commenter can pick an ebook from my backlist, I have a couple of spooky werewolves, vampires, demons, or Little Red Riding Hood! EEEEEEEEEEK

And here’s a peek at one of Vivi’s favorite horror films:

Those are a great list of movies.I have to go with old school..the new ones are all about gore and I can’t stand that. My favorites are Sleepaway Camp,Cujo,Nightmare on Elm St.
Rockets are also my favorite candy.I’m glad I can but them year round.I always have a bag handy to munch on.
I have to agree with old school. I saw Shaun of the Dead, and it was all right, but I’d rather watch a new episode of NCIS. Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds was creepy, because that’s something I can imagine happening. It’s been many years since I last saw the movie, but when I walk the dog and see a gathering of birds, I think about the movie and feel a little chill.
candy corn! My fav but only during this time of the year. As far as movies, I’m a SCREAM kinda gal, give me something to scare me just a little, I don’t want to have a $500 powerbill from keeping all the lights on!
Hm, this is actually a tough question. I grew up watching Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street which were downright scary to me (as a kid) and don’t EVEN get me started on The Exorcist – a movie I couldn’t make myself watch until I was nearly 20. Favorite scare fest flicks: The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Halloween, Halloween 2, and I’ll admit I screamed a little for The Unborn (I was startled!).
Whoo hoo Cynthia!! Its the first day of a GREAT month π
Hmmm, old school by far is better than today’s wanna be horror movies. Some that scare me every time I watch them are: SCREAM, THE EXORCIST, ALIEN, HOUSE OF WAX and PIT AND THE PENDULUM ( love Vincent Price movies ).
Favorite Halloween candy, actually have 2, Tootsie Rolls and Reece Peanut Butter Cups, YUM π
Thanks for starting the party, Vivi!! And Cursed is one of my fave movies, too.
For the candy…oh, I always steel the Twix bars that my son gets for Halloween. It’s my duty as his mom to protect him from that yummy goodness.
Yaaaayyyyyaaa Ms. Cynthia!! I love this party! And having Ms. Vivi is awesome!!
I am a big scaried cat!!! I watch movies under a blanket and with hands over eyes and my head under my shirt!
Yea… big scaried cat!!! But I do prefer old school horror than today’s gorge fest. Hubby on the other hand will put on anything scary… Stupid, gross, gorge, old school horror, he just loves those movies. And of course makes me watch them!!! **eeekkk hides under blankets**
And my favorite candy… Well, Tootsie Rolls will always stay my fave!! But almost anything chocolate… I have to test the candy to make sure it is good for my family to eat… lol!!
**Ms. Cynthia come check out my place. I am having a party all month long too. My birthday is the day before Halloween. So I am celebrating. Come over and drop your name in the hats of giveaways… all month long**
Old School horror is the best! I love a movies that don’t show a lot of blood and guts..Scare me with what could be there (never quite sure, but something is there!). When my oldest 2 stepdaughters were younger they loved the Elm Street / Halloween movies – I wouldn’t let them watch ’em at my house. I scared the beejeesus out of them with THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS with Betty Davis…A Disney Movie hehehe.
My favorite candy is Milky Way! My youngest just turned 20 and is too Old to trick or treat!
Creepy horror! My favorite horror film is Fright Night with William Ragsdale and Chris Sarandon (eye candy!!!). I enjoyed the humor and the late Roddy MacDowell. I don’t know if this is really horror, but it’s really creepy and suspenseful-I don’t recall the title but Audrey Hepburn plays a blind woman and killers are after her.
Favorite candy is anything chocolate, no candy corn, mary janes or other cheap stuff. Now that I give out the candy, I always give chocolate. I only average 2 trick or treaters a year π .
Old School two thumbs up!!! Hitchcock’s The Birds my scariest. Can’t look at a group of black birds without thinking about that movie. Hershey’s Minatures–Dark Chocolate my favorite.
Definitely old school! The Shining is, to me, one of the ultimate scary films of all time.
Favorite candy is Rolo, anything that has a taste of caramel.
All about old school, new horror movies aren’t about anyting other than a bunch blood and guts, BORING! Alien, Psycho and Exorcist now those are scary movies.
Favorite candy, hmmmm this is hard. Snickers, the more nuts the better π
Old school horror are the best! Carey scared me BIG TIME!! Watched that movie when I was 10 and I cannot even see the cover for that movie without being scared. That is so sad, I can’t watch it to this day π
Fav candy I can narrow down to two, sometimes I feel like a nut, sometimes I don’t, Mounds and Almond Joy π
I love horror movies of all kinds, but I agree the Saw type movies are just gross outs. I have only watched to first one which says a lot about them. Old school are probably my favs though. Have you seen “The Forsaken” with Kerr Smith and Brendan Fehr, it would fit right in with your list of favorites. I also love the Dark Castle movies, their remakes of old classics are great.
As for candy 3 musketeers win hands down.
I don’t like the slasher bloody movies, I like a scary movie that is suspenseful and scary without all the blood.
Yeah for old school horror. and you nailed it Kimberley, our imaginations about what COULD BE THERE, is way more powerful than a bunch of blood and guts on the screen.
Oh The Exorcist…yeah, to this day, I can’t watch it.
oh and When A Stranger Calls, the original one, not the remake. Ooooo, still get chill bumps, especially in that scene where she’s looking through the house, and we see his eyeball through the crack in the door. AHHHHHHHHHH! Still freaks me out!
One of my favorite scary movies is The Woman in Black. It is an old British-made movie – don’t even know if it is available on dvd or not. It isn’t what was shown that was scary, but what wasn’t, if you know what I mean.
Also, not a movie, but Dark Shadows, the revival series, had it scary moments, too!
Favorite candy is Hot Tamales and I do like to eat candy corn too but not in big batches.
I really prefer “horror” movies like Beetlejuice and Addams Family.
My vote would be old school. My favorite Halloween candy is candy corn.
I don’t like the gore at all. My favorite Haloween candy is anything that is soft and chewy :>)
Yeah, I’m defintiely with you on the classics being much better than some of the scary movies of today. Either way, I love watching scary movies between my fingers as I try and cover my eyes, lol
Ooh, as for candy, this time of the year I always look forward to candy corn *yummy*
I like your top 10 list of movies better, Vivi.
I think I’m between the lines here~~I like SOME of both. I DO have my limit, though, lol. Movies like The Hills Have Eyes are a little TOO gross for even me, ugh.
And it wasn’t even the blood!! It was the thought of all that inbreeding and those TOE NAILS at the beginning of the 2nd movie. That was enough to make me ill for days, lmao.
And fav Halloween candy? Reeces Cups!!
Okay, I have a question. Would movies from 70’s and 80’s be considered Old School? I’m not sure if I really want to know the answer to that or what implications that would have on me and my age. LOL But if I had to choose, then I have to go with the Classics. I still remember watching CARRIE when I was in elementary (nobody ever claimed my mom had good judgment) and that whole hand popping out of the ground scene at the end of the movie is still stuck in my head even after all these years. That Stephen King is one freaky man. π
Fav Halloween Candy? A good old Hershey bar. Or Kit Kat. Or Reeces Cup…Hell anything chocolate will suffice.
I am very old school with my horror films. I do mean WAAAAYYYY back there. I love the old B horror films like the Blob, Dracula, The Wolfman with Lon Chaney. I still get a kick out of those. If I want to laugh I pull out my Abbott and Costello meets the Wolfman, or the one where they meet the Invisible Man, they are always fun.
Old school creeps me out, especially movies like the original Damien and Carrie.
I love Candy Corn!!!
Not one for horror movies period. My brain is way too receptive and imaginative, which they have a tendency to have me scare myself silly. Now my hubs LOVES them.
Now there are some that I can tolerate and actually love. You mentioned some like The Lost Boys (part two was not all that great), Dracula 2000 (and the two sequels to that), The Craft (loved that one), The Covenant was excellent!!! I do like Ginger Snaps (the second wasn’t that great)
Whenever the hubs and I check the boys’ candy (I have three) I always snitch a twizzler or babyruth. Sometimes my boys knows this and they’ll give me one or two.
I like them both, the campier or scarier the better. My favorite candy are the mini candy bars.
I like old school horror much more than todays movies.
My favorite Halloween candy is anything with chocolate…
I am definitly not a slasher fan. My favourite is Dracula 2000, Gerard Butler is soooooo cooool!!! Yum. Cursed looks really good and I really like Christine Ricci. Sleepy Hollow is a fav of mine, so is Sweeny Todd.
Halloween candy? Mmmmmm…..I don’t really eat candy, at least I try not to.
I love scrary movies and slasher flicks are fun to watch too if they are campy. You know the ones that you just know some TSTL heroine is going to get killed. I always liked jeering at the dingy people on the friday the 13th movies. You could always tell when someone was going to get killed lol. My friends and I used to have a movies nights with movies like this. We’d sleep over at one person’s house with the lights out and munchies and have a blast. Usually the friend’s house we wound up at was the one whose mom worked third so there was a bunch of us girls in the house by ourselves. My BF at the time scrared the dickens out of my friends. he knocked on the door and those chickens wouldn’t answer and when I did he dragged me out of the house. Scrared them to death cause they couldn’t see who it was. And was afriad to look.
I love anything Reece’s and the little bit size candy bars.
Okay have to ask what the heck is Rocket’s and where can I try one? lol
I must be in a minority as I am not one for horror films or halloween candy. I do love the great stories that abound at that time though. Nothing better than the odd witch or werewolf prowling the pages π
I’m not a big fan of horror movies…they scare me too much, LOL! I do like many of Stephen King’s though, like Needful Things and The Shining. My favorite scary movie is probably Watchers, based on the Dean Koontz novel- loved that movie, not as much as the book though ;- )
My favorite candy is probably Smarties…..or maybe the little Oh Henry! bars…can’t decide :- )
I can’t watch horror movies. I have too active an imagination and end up jumping and paranoid over every little noise. *G* I do like movies like Rose Red, The Diary of Ellen Rembauer, and some of the old school type movies. Darcula 2000 was pretty good and there was one based on Jack the Ripper that was pretty good, too.
As for candy? Hmmm, Bit O Honey’s are a fav any my kids don’t like them. Hot tamales and tootsie rolls are yummy as well. *G*
I used to watch a boat load of horror movies – a cross between old school creep and gore. But the last one I watched was the Evil Dead some years ago. I just about had a heart attack and they actually had a health warning on the label – didn’t quite catch that until partway through the movie. That one did it for me…
Favorite Halloween candy? – Kandy Korns – love the sugar rush!!!
I love both-Horror Rocks!
Favorite candy – anything chocolate.
Old school horror flicks all the way baby!!!! Today’s horror movies are just about how bloody they can make them, no scare to them.
Favorite candy is 3 Musketeers π
Can’t stand gory movies. Nothing scary ’bout them … just gross. Looking at your list, I think I’ve seen all of maybe three of them. I take that back … I saw two of them π I’m a chicken when it comes to scary movies. Loved the old black and whites, though. The Wolfman, Dracula (with Bela Lugosi), Frankenstein’s Monster.
But I gotta admit to lovin’ “Young Frankenstein”. It was a hoot.
Favorite candy is anything chocolate, Nerds and Runts.
The originals…House of Wax, The Pit and The Pendulum, The Birds…they were all the best. They kept you thinking about them long after the movie was over. Those are the kind of movies I loved.
My favorite Halloween candy is Candy Corn.
I love the cheesy slasher flicks like the Friday the 13th and Halloween movies. I like the mini Twix and Snickers.
I don’t find splatter movies scary–I actually laugh at them because they tend to be over-the-top. I like the moody psychological movies where the scare is more from your imagination.
And my favorite candy is mini Kit Kat bars. If they’re mini then I don’t feel as guilty about eating them.
I got turned off from horror movies by Poltergeist and I never got into any after that; I have watched Scream movies and even Friday the thirteenth but only with my kids so They wouldn’t be scared, it’s just not my choice of entertainment.
My favorite candy: chip or black licorice bags.
Great contest! Let’s have some fun.
I really love the old school movies. One of my favorite actors to star in these types is Vincent Price, the master of suspense! I got to watch a marathon of his movies and loved every moment.
There is a big difference between gory and suspense. I would rather take an old fashion scare any day.
As far as favorite Halloween candy…that would be Candy Corn. I like the original the best.
Don’t like gory movies, but do like the old B movies
Favorite halloween candy, snickers
I’ll tell you the truth, I can take them either way because I just love horror movies. I do have fond memories of 80s flicks though, the original Friday the 13th and Halloween, which my girlfriends and I would have marathons of on their respective holidays. Also, the movies of that era were really campy too, so you could have some comedy with your blood and guts, like most of Bruce Campbell’s movies.
As far as newer movies, The Covenant is wonderful! *sigh* and what about all those hunks? I have to pick my tongue back up off the floor everytime I watch it. lol
I have to have a bag of mellowcreme pumpkins every Halloween and I just love the orange creme chocolate pumpkins made by Russell Stover.
Deidre
Yummm I love Halloween Candy. We have a party every year in my house. Carmal Apple Candy Corn and the pumpkins are my fav candy. I love making popcorn balls and The Covenant is sooo wonderful or it’s Steven Strait yum yum. Freddie was the movies I grew up on. My brother took me to the theater for the opening of Thriller when I was 9…. Scary movies have me hiding most time and screamnig but it’s fun.
Creepy horror are the best. I love movies like Identity and Psycho
My favorites from your list are all the Blades 1,2,3 and The Lost Boys. A few that I would add is Van Helsing, Riddick, Pitch Black and the Underworld movies.
OOOOO no horror films for me!! Im such a wimp when it comes to stuff like that. My evil husband makes me watch Halloween with him and seriously, I have nightmares for weeks!
Now, I love me some Van Helsing, and Blade and the Underworld moview ROCK!
Fave Halloween candy…Hullo….CANDY CORN!!!!
Hi Cynthia & Vivi! What a way to start out the great month of Oct. I personally am old school. I like the orig Wolfman, Mummy and my fave, Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein. I love to take an afternoon and just watch the old horror classics. On the other hand, I also like movies such as Cursed and The Covenant. My fave Halloween candy is the mini Heath Bars and Tootsie Rolls.
Both lists look like they some pretty good horror flicks. Sadly, I’m not much for horror and getting the bejesus scared out of me. I get way too jumpy afterwards to find the experience enjoyable. lol
My favorite Halloween candy is the little packets of Reese’s pieces. Yummy!
