Monster fun with Michele Hauf Back to Blog

Update: The winners of the two copies of Midnight Cravings are: Morning Glow and Barbara Elness. Congrats!!!

Most of us believe quite firmly we can never love a monster.  I mean, monsters are…monstrous, right?  They are not human, most often ugly and have fangs, and might even have body parts falling off at inconvenient times.  One of the most loved literary monsters happens to creep about in the night in search of human blood, he can fly, change to mist or a wolf, and isn’t at all averse to biting a gap in your neck and ripping you to shreds.  And when he’s done he crawls into a coffin lined with ancient dirt for a little shut-eye before engaging in more blood frenzy the following day.

A monster, right?

And yet, vampires seem to be the sexiest monsters around right now.  Women go crazy for them, yes, even the sparkly ones.  When did our monsters start to sparkle?  And when did our monsters decide taking a withdrawal from a blood bank was kinder and more efficient than chomping down on a warm, pulsing neck?  We’re supposed to fear vampires, not open our arms and embrace them.

My first vampire ‘love’ was Lestat.  He seduced me with his brat-prince antics and 18th century fashion sense.  Sure, he was a monster who slept in a coffin and yet he owned his monstrosity.  Yeah, he was a brooder, but I don’t recall him apologizing for it.

Who was your first vampire love?  Does he have his moments of monstrosity despite his dark and brooding appeal?

I have 2 copies of MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, an anthology featuring my short story “Racing the Moon” to giveaway.

I’ve never been a big monster lover. In the last few years, we’ve been seeing a lot of paranormal books, and the romance writers are making them sexy. For me, they weren’t that sexy before this. When Cynthia writes about one of her monster characters, they are HOT! I think a good writer can make a monster sexy.

  2. Susan says:

My first vampire love was Barnabas Collins. He struggled very much with who/what he was and while tried to rise above his blood craving and being generally nasty, sometimes he didn’t win that battle. I think he might have been the first sympathetic vampire.

  3. Cheryl McInnis says:

Lestat never really “did” it for me, even before Tom Cruise played him in the movie, LOL. The first vampire I can recall that peaked my interest was Jean-Claude from Laurell K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series. He was sexy and suave, but could really take a bite out of someone if he wanted to ;- ). Of course, Jean-Claude doesn’t seem to show up as much in Hamilton’s newer books…maybe that’s why I don’t seem to enjoy them as much?

  4. Joanne K says:

Can I love a monster, heck yes! You’re talking to one of those chics who adores the new, sexy image of the Vampire — I’ve loved vampires since the cult hit ‘The Lost Boys’ hit our movie theaters. It wasn’t a vamp I fell in love in that movie, but the cutesy little Sam. Bless his cottons. Then I sort out every vamp flick I could get my hands on, and then came Bram Stokers ‘Dracula. That was my first ‘monster love’. Oh, I wish he would cross oceans of time to be with me! Hubba hubba.

And that is when my fascinating for Anne Rice books came in. In fact, it’s when I fell in love with all things vampire. Yes, a Lestat lover here, too!

Any monster can be sexy, mean, brooding… dangerous or otherwise — it’s the danger that makes ’em sexy, for me anyway.

Isn’t it time a new sexy vampire hit the big screen? Yeah, sparkles don’t do it for me. LOL

  5. Stacy W says:

I think my first crush (on screen) was Louis de Pointe du Lac from Interview with a Vampire…better know as Brad Pitt 🙂 hawt!

  6. Morning Glow says:

I’m going to have to agree with an earlier poster.. Jean-Claude from the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton. I know I read paranormal romance and such before that… but Jean-Claude sort of sealed the deal for me. I think he sort of opened the world for me to see other characters, more characters, in such a light.

    Thanks!

  7. Pamk says:

Would have to be Maggie Shayne’s Twilight series oh so long ago. I believe these were some of the first vamp romances I’ve read years ago. And they rock imo better than the new twilight lol. but these are full grown vamps so that could be the difference.

  8. Teresa W. says:

My favorite was Stuart Townsend in The Queen of the Damned!

  9. Jamie Birdwell says:

I have loved vampires since I can remember so I can’t really recall my first love but some of the most memorable Vamps in my life would be

The Lost Boys (they were hot back in the day)
Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (yumm brooding and bad)

  10. Nancy Gilliland says:

I used to rush home from school every day just to get my Barnabas Collins fix-yeah, yeah, I know, giving my age away pretty much there-so I guess he was my first vampire crush. Strangely, Jonathan Frid wasn’t all that handsome but as Barnabas, he just had…something.

  11. ann marie says:

My favorite vampire is Lestat de Lioncourt (Stuart Townsend) from the movie The Queen of the Damned. He was made to play that role.

  12. Raonaid Luckwell says:

I have to agree with Jaime there on The Lost Boys. That’s about the only thing that came to mind with the question.

  13. Minna says:

There is no way I can remember my first vampire love.

  14. Ina says:

My first vampire love was James Masters alias Spike (Buffy) – oh, what is he cute *sigh*
    have a great day!

  15. Michele says:

Ah, the Lost Boys. Keiffer as vampire. Such a sweetie in a biting kind of way. And those twins! Was it the Nelson brothers?

I have never seen the original Dark Shadows, but I do confess to falling head over heels for Ben Cross’s version of Barnabas Collins. I know, I know.

And I’ve never read Anita Blake, but man, do I hear a lot about Jean-Claude. Does he have his own story? Or is there a particular Anita Blake story that focuses a lot on him that I could pick up just to check him out?

  16. Melissa says:

OMG, I LOVE The Lost boys. Sexy sexy vamps. Yum!! My first vamp novel was one of Maggie Shayne’s~~and I’ve been hooked since!!

  17. Valerie says:

I love vampires too!!! And I agree with the poster who said that her ‘crush’ is Stuart Townsend as Lestat from Queen of the Damned. Love that movie!!!

  18. LaRonda Atchison says:

Jean-Claude of the Anita Blake series would have to be my first vampire “crush”. HOT HOT HOT! Yes he’s definitely a monster at times but he’s also “old school” romantic and protective. (sigh) It’s fantasy after all.

  19. Michele says:

hey, ladies, since we’re mooning over vamp men, I should mention my VampBoyz blog. It’s a very simple concept. Every other day, I post a new pic of a vampire man to drool over. check it at:

  20. Shari C says:

It is a touch choice between Angel from the Buffy series and then his own series and the vampires from the Laws of the Blood series by Susan Sizemore whose vampires act like enforcers or vampires cops who enforce the laws to protect humans from vampires and also visa versa.

  21. Eva S says:

My first vampire love was Darach MacKenzie, from Master of Ecstacy by Nina Bangs.

  22. susan leech says:

I am fairly new at the vampires and were wolves but my hubby just reminded me I did read vampire books a long time ago. I had the complete series of Barnabas Collins’ and loved them so much. We are talking quite a few years and I really forgot about them. My husband ‘s memory is better than mine. ha ha susan L.

  23. Donna S says:

My first was The Lost Boys. They were all so great.

  24. Jacqueline L. says:

I can’t recall. It might very well have been Jean-Claude from Laurell k. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series…

  25. blodeuedd says:

Hm who was it, I don’t know, perhaps gary Oldman in Dracula, or perhaps I have always liked them without needing someone to look at

  26. Jane says:

My first vampire love was Jim Carrey in “Once Bitten.”

  27. Jody F. says:

Even though he was the bad guy, my first vamp lust was for Keifer Sutherland in The Lost Boys. He was like a little boy who just wanted to have his way, but I fell for him anyway.

  28. Liz Kreger says:

Ooooo, gimme Bones from Jeanienne Frosts’ series. Yum.

Jean Claude would be a very close second.

  29. Taylor Z says:

My first vampire love…Bones maybe, or the Lost Boys…

  30. Diane Sadler says:

We are talking about a long time ago, but I remember Maggie Shayne’s Harlequin books and they were great. There were others before her but those I remember well.

  31. Estella says:

Myfavorite monster is Eric from the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.

  32. Barb Patrick says:

Hi Michele! I guess that I am probably showing my age here, but my first Vamp love was Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows started the whole thing for me. I’ve been in love with anything paranormal, especially vamps, ever since.

  33. Karin says:

Lestat is also my first vampire love. While I’m not a huge fan, vampires have definitely become sexy and sometimes irresistible. Lestat was the first that really showed me that, especially in the Queen of the Damned movie. There was something about the way that Stuart Townsend played Lestat that drew me to him. Perhaps it was that he was a wounded hero who was not so happy about losing his humanity.

  34. MicheleH says:

My first vampire love would have to be Etienne Argeneau from Lynsay Sands Aregeneau series “sigh” 🙂

  35. Angela says:

Hate to be so cliche, but I recently have been introduced into the paranormal world and read TWILIGHT. So for me Edward would be my first vampire love 🙂

  36. Deidre says:

I adored George Harrison in Love at First Bite.

    Deidre

  37. AmyW says:

Hi Michele, thanks for stopping by 😀

For me, my first vampire love would have to be hands done Spike. Now that is one hot, bad a_ _ vampire 🙂 Ok, I’m a little warm right now, lol 🙂

  38. Amy says:

Hmmm, first vampire love. Got to think about this one… Vladimir Rurikovich from the book YOUR SO VEIN by Christine Warren. Now that is one vampire that could pretty much talk me into anything 😀

  39. Darkreader says:

my first vampire love was the Dark-Hunters by Sherrilyn Kenyon – She was the first paranormal author I read and now I have a library full of authors I collect who write paranormal series!

  40. Barbara Elness says:

I think it was more than one – those boys in Lost Boys – they were so hot.

  41. Chelsea B. says:

You know, I say this with no shame at all because it introduced me to the supernatural vampire world, and I still love the book. So for me its Edward Cullen from Twilight. I also really loved Emmett and Jasper, I’m not picky 😉

  42. Quilt Lady says:

I am with Chelsea, it was Edward form Twilight! I loved this series. They always drink animal blood, so they where good vampires! I even loved Jake when he was a werewolf!

  43. stacey smith says:

I renember falling in love whit the Movie Lost Boys But did not fall for a Vampire intill Angel from Buffy.

  44. Normie says:

Definitely Lestat, played by Stuart Townsend, in The Queen of the Damned! Lestat / Stuart Townsend was gorgeous! I love a dark and brooding hero. He was all that wrapped up in sexy. That movie made for some great dreams for the following nights after watching.

  45. RKCharron says:

Thank you for the great post Michele 🙂
My first vampire love was Vampirella.
    All the best,
    RKCharron
    xoxo

  46. I love the boon of paranormal books that is sweeping across bookstores right now. I read the Anne Rice books back in the 80’s/90’s and devoured them – but they were the romantic vampires that we have today. But my first vampire “luv” would have to be Edward from Twilight.

  47. Tameka Green says:

This sounds so sexual midnight craving the cover is so cool, dark and mysterious.

  48. Pat Cochran says:

My DS1 is a great Anne Rice fan, DD2 never missed Buffy
& Angel. (If I had known David Boreanaz was Angel, I would
not have missed the show either! LOL) Anyway, I am not so
much into paranormals: I’ve read one demon book & started
two vamps, but haven’t finished them yet! My vamp favorite
(after the fact) would have to be Angel/David Boreanaz.

    Pat Cochran

  49. Pam P says:

Barnabas Collins was the first for me, too. I found Nancy Gideon’s Midnight series some years back and Maggie Shayne’s Twilight series, and having been reading vampire romances ever since.

  50. Kris M says:

Bram Stoker’s Dracula actually. i always wanted him to end up with Mina.
