My next guest is DOUBLE RITA finalist Joyce Lamb. Joyce writes some incredible romantic suspense, and I am thrilled to have her visiting with me today. Welcome, Joyce!!! And congrats on your new release!

***

Congratulations, Cynthia, on the release of Angel Betrayed! I hope you’re partying your heiny off. I’m lifting a virtual toast to you as we speak. (Mm, chocolate martini!)

So now I’m going to ride your very impressive coattails (whee!!) with news that I have a new release, too. FLASH HEAT, a never-before-published e-book, is now available for Kindle and Nook. This book features one of my favorite couples. Bailey and Cole’s banter constantly made me smile while I was writing. I’d like to think that’s because they’re so very entertaining, rather than I just happen to really amuse myself.

Here’s a snippet:

“Come on,” Cole said “You’re not chicken, are you?”

“Don’t even go there.”

“Don’t make me cluck.”

“God, I can’t stand it when grown men cluck.”

And another snippet:

“If you backpedal any faster, you’re going to leave a Cole-shaped hole in the wall.”

He grinned. “Kind of like the Road Runner, huh?”

“If you make that meep-meep sound, I’m going to be creeped out.”

“I try to keep my meep-meeping to a minimum.”

Here’s some info about the plot of FLASH HEAT:

Photographer Bailey Chase and reporter Cole Goodman only tolerate working with each other at a Southwest Florida newspaper. Cole knows Bailey’s ex, and he’s told Cole lots of lies about her. Not that Bailey cares. She’s still healing from that disastrous relationship and has far more important issues on her plate: such as keeping her recovering drug addict brother on the right track as a single dad to his 6-year-old son.

When Bailey gets slightly injured during a mugging while on assignment with Cole, she’s shocked that he sticks around to help her out. He’s kind and warm and caring … and when it soon becomes clear that the mugging wasn’t random, he reveals a protective streak that quickly turns into far more.

Cole has never loved a woman who didn’t let him down. His mother abandoned him as a child. His sister hasn’t been there for her own kids. And his ex-wife did something he can never forgive her for. So he has no interest whatsoever in getting involved with Bailey Chase, a woman who already has way too much baggage. Except he can’t seem to help himself. She’s just … so … hot. And exasperating. And amazing.

Now, someone is after a photo in Bailey’s possession, and he’ll clearly stop at nothing to get it. Worse, it appears her brother’s shady past is connected.

Cole and Bailey team up to crack this mystery before someone ends up dead. While they’re at it, they let the sparks fly …

And, hey, if you love romance novels as much as I do, you might be interested in the blog I do for USA Today (the Nation’s Newspaper!) that’s dedicated entirely to romances. Happy Ever After celebrates all genres, from erotica to inspirational, and all methods of publication, including self-pubbed. HEA’s contributors include best-selling authors Pamela Clare, Michelle Monkou and Virna DePaul. I hope you’ll stop by Happy Ever After (happyeverafter.usatoday.com) and decide to visit regularly.

So, readers, are there romance heroes and heroines who’ve made you giggle? J.D. Robb’s Eve and Roarke never fail to make me smile. And, of course, all of Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ couples make me laugh out loud. You?

I loved the romance between Mariketa and Bowen from Kresley Cole’s “Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night”. I also loved the relationship between Suzanne Enoch’s Sam & Richard.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Danni!
I responded to your comment further down, but this is what I said so you don’t have to scroll to find it:
I’ve heard that about Kresley’s heroes and heroines. I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t read any of her books lately. But now that I know Mariketa and Bowen are so amusing, I’ll have to catch up.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  2. Khelsey says:

I would agree to Eve and Roarke. My favorite couple and they always make me laugh!

    • Joyce says:

Go, Eve and Roarke! I still remember when I read Naked in Death and kept going, “Oh my God, these two ROCK.” I even sent fan e-mail to Nora — this was back in the day when AOL was newer. And she responded! That was pretty awesome.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. Judi L says:

I just finished Lothaire by Kresley Cole and her character’s always make me laugh. Did a lot of laughing reading that book.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Judi!
I responded to your comment further down, but this is what I said so you don’t have to scroll to find it:
ey, another vote for a Kresley Cole couple. Cool!
I have to say the cover of Lothaire does not make me laugh, but it sure does make me tingle. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

  5. The Warrior says:

Eve and Roarke definitely! and I just finished Seeker of Shadows by Nancy Gideon..excellent read! 😀

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Warrior!
OK, I’m kinda slow. I just realized that I can reply directly to everyone’s comments instead of adding mine on at the bottom. It’s been a long day!
And now you need to give me a sec while I add Nancy Gideon’s book to my TBR pile … OK, I’m back.
Thanks for saying hi and offering a recommendation!

  6. Lucy Nina says:

I could think of a few but, when I thought about this question, a couple of guys in a certain series came to mind: Vishous and Butch. When those two got together it always made me smile 🙂

  7. donnas says:

Eve and Roarke. Cat and Bones. are two of my favorites.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Donnas!
Maybe we can get J.D Robb and Jeaniene Frost to do an Eve-and-Roarke Cat-and-Bones crossover. That’d be cool!
Jeaniene was at Happy Ever After today, in fact, talking about who she would cast as Cat and Bones if there were ever a TV series based on her books. Was fun!
      Thanks for saying hi!

  8. Diane says:

And Stephanie Plum and her 2 suitors!!!

Eve and Roarke you can count on.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Diane!
Ohhhh, I’ve never been able to decide between Joe and Ranger. Lucky Stephanie, though. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

  11. Kara C says:

LOVE Sam And Nick from Marie Force’s FATAL series. Always good for some laugh out loud moments. Also have to agree with SEP’s couples.

Can’t wait to read this new book, Joyce!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Kara!
Great to “see” you here! Yep, Marie’s couples are awesome. And SEP’s, too. I can never get enough of either one.
      Thanks for coming over!

  12. Lora Patten says:

Oh goodness, I don’t know if I can narrow down to one favorite couple. I would say that a few of my favorites are Madeleine de la Haute Vironge & Aimery de Gaillard in Lord of My Heart, Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp or Brianna Fraser and Roger Mac in the Outlander series, any of the heroes or heroines in Stephanie Laurens books (they always have such delicious battles of wits)! I love books where the main characters are in a love/hate relationship with each other or are so in tune with each other that they can’t help but to push each others’ buttons!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Lora!
Yep, the button-pushing does it for me, too. I have a great time writing those kinds of characters, too. They take off on their little banter fests, and I’m just trying to keep up.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  13. Di Lamb says:

The new book sounds awesome like all the other’s – I didn’t even know you had one being released….wow I am way outta the loop – Love you and great job praying for a rita win for you –

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Di!
Surprise! : ) I released Flash Heat myself, and I kinda didn’t tell everyone cuz I was really behind and feared I wouldn’t be able to deliver on time. : )
Thanks on the Rita wishes. Fingers crossed!
      ttfn!

  14. Maria Pronounced Mariah says:

Oh I agree with Roarke & Eve. I also love Mac & Barrons!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Maria!
Oh, definitely Mac and Barrons. Have you ever listened to the audio versions of the Fever books? The ones where Phil Gigante reads Barrons’ parts give me chills. Phil also reads KMM’s Highlander books — I could listen to that man read the phone book.
      Thanks for saying hi!

    • Maria pronounced Mariah says:

I haven’t. I have heard that his voice is amazing! I’m always to busy reading new books to go back and re-read (or listen) to ones I have alread read.

  15. Joyce says:

    Hi, Judi!
Hey, another vote for a Kresley Cole couple. Cool!
I have to say the cover of Lothaire does not make me laugh, but it sure does make me tingle. : )
    Thanks for saying hi!

  16. Joyce says:

I love Jill’s books, too. And, hey, if you’re interested in trying to win one of her Lucky Harbor books, I’m hosting a giveaway at the Happy Ever After blog I mentioned here. It’s at happyever.usatoday.com. : )

  17. Sheryl Nyary says:

The Black Dagger Brotherhood!!! They all have the best lines.
    V & Butch
    Wrath & Z
Rhage is the king of one liners!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Sheryl!
One-liners are the most fun. And I’m not surprised JR Ward’s characters are masters — she’s a wicked awesome writer. (Does that “wicked awesome” make me sound like I’m 12?)
      Thanks for saying hi!

  18. StacieD says:

I love the banter between Adrian and Gillian in Lauren Dane’s book Never Enough. They don’t like each other at first but they fall for each other soon enough.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, StacieD!
Banter in general really gets me going — especially when it’s good banter. : )
      Thanks for stopping by!

  19. Barb P says:

Hi Joyce! There are two authors who come to mind that always make me chuckle. Darynda Jones’ Grim Reaper Charley, and her BFF Cookie also Teri Garrey’s Nikki Styx series. I would love to be able to read Flash Heat. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Barb!
I’ve heard that about the Nikki Styx series. Thanks for reminding me about it! And, oh, I LOVE Darynda’s Charley. What a cool concept she is!
      Thanks for saying hi!

  20. Cheryl McInnis says:

I love laughing at the friendships in Shelley Laurenston’s books…the teasing and tormenting and insults remind me of my own friends and family 🙂

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Cheryl!
Oh, good one! That’s always nice when a book reminds you of what’s most important.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  21. JoAnna B says:

I love some humor with my romance. Kitty Martini in Gini Koch’s Alien series has me laughing all the time.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, JoAnna!
Oh, dear, I’ve never even heard of that series. What’s wrong with me?!??! And anyone with the last name “Martini” is sure to keep me entertained. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

  22. Colleen says:

Oh my… love Eve & Roarke… I know I have read quite a few books that made me laugh and loved the funny personalities of the characters, but at this moment I am blank… uggggh!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Colleen!
Eve and Roarke tend to have the mind-blanking effect on me, too, sometimes. They’re quite a tough act to top! I bet you’ll think of a bunch of couples around 3 in the morning. That’s usually when I remember the errand I told myself not to forget to do. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

  23. Vanessa N. says:

I love when stories can make laugh such as the couples in Shely Laurenston’s Pack and Prides series and the couples in Gail Koger’s books. Thanks for the giveaway.

    mythic021@gmail.com

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Vanessa!
Oh, yeah, Happy Ever After contributor Jessie Potts LOVED Bear Meets Girl. I’ve added it to my TBR list, though that list is quickly becoming my “dream on” list.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  24. Raonaid Luckwell says:

Oh yes there have been quite a many heroine and hero who have made me giggle. Tabitha and Valerian from Kenyon’s dark hunters

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Raonaid!
Heee, you wouldn’t expect a series called Dark Hunters to have an amusing couple. I just love romance authors!
      Thanks for stopping by!

  25. Jolene A says:

Stephanine Plum always makes me laugh and so does Kerrelyn Sparks Vamps

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Jolene!
Yep, Stephanie Plum is a good one indeed. You know who else is really funny? Lucky O’Toole in Deborah Coonts’ Lucky books. A total hoot.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  26. Patty C says:

    Hi Joyce!
I love having fun banter in a romance. Like Stephanie Plum’s love triangle in Janet Evonovich’s books. I actually laughed out loud alot in the Fifty Shades series as well, and THAT was what kept me reading!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Patty!
The e-mail exchanges in Fifty Shades of Grey totally made me snicker. I think someone could write a whole book just of e-mail exchanges like that, and it’d be awesome. Hmm … getting an idea …
      Thanks for saying hi!

  27. Sherry says:

Eve & Roarke are my favorite couple ever. I love them and they always make me laugh but sometimes cry too. They are just amazing.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Sherry!
Eve and Roarke have made me cry a lot, too. Luckily, they’re always happy by the end of each book. Otherwise I wouldn’t be able to stand it!
      Thanks for saying hi!

  28. Lisa B says:

I love the couples in all Jill Shalvis books. She writes humorous couples like no other. A new author Lexi George write hilarious couple in her Demon hunter series also. Love when the couple make sme laugh out loud. Sometimes you really need that too.

Thannks for sharing this book sounds great!

    Lisa B

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Lisa!
Jill knows how to write a fun couple, doesn’t she? Not that I’m surprised. Her blog is hilarious!
Thanks for the tip on Lexi George … making a note of it.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  29. Alan Hinton says:

Hope this latest book is as good as your others – and I know it will be. Keep up the good work, Joyce.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Alan!
Thanks!! And, hey, congrats on your retirement! I hope you’re enjoying your newfound freedom. I can’t imagine you’re missing work even a little bit.
      Take care!

  30. Julia - Yen says:

I agree with the two couples you named (Roarke/Eve and all SEP’s couple), they are my favorite too 🙂 Any couples from Jill Shalvis books and Jamie/Claire from Outlander series always make me giggle and smile. I love Lucky/Tessa from ‘Whisper Falls’ by Toni Blake.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Julia-Yen!
What is it about books with a “Lucky” in either the title or as a character name that makes them so awesome? I’m thinking of a character named Lucky Luckyson who lives in Lucky Town and smokes Lucky Strikes. The title: I Love Lucky! Like “I Love Lucy” … get it? (Yeah, I’m a little punchy at the moment.)
      Thanks for saying hi!

  31. Brandy Swain says:

I agree with some of the other post, JR Ward’s characters are great, Jeaniene Frost’s characters, etc. the most recent book that had me laughing out loud was Molly Harper’s Jane Jameson series. I listened to the audiobook of this series and would find myself laughing out loud while on my morning run. I’m sure people thought I was crazy! LOL

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Brandy!
Ohhh, I’ve been wanting to check out Molly Harper’s books. I didn’t realize they were available in audio — I just now went to Audible and used a credit to buy Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs. I can’t wait to listen!
Thanks for the tip and saying hi!

  32. Rachel C. says:

I read a book Angela’s Coven by Bruce Jenvey and that book had me laughing. I love to laugh when I read.—Rachel

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Rachel!
So do I. That’s why I love SEP’s books. Rachel Gibson’s and Julie James’, too. OH, and Kristan Higgins … hilarious.
      Thanks for dropping by!

  33. Cris says:

Can I say any Nora Roberts, J.D. Robb, and SEP couple? No? Then how about just Eve & Roarke and Elizabeth/Abigail & Brooks from Nora’s ‘The Witness’– he was just so easygoing and she was so adorably socially awkward (I spend my time surrounded by high-achieving scientists; I know brilliant-but-sociallyawkward) :P.

Congrats on the new release (both Joyce & Cynthia)– two new books going on my epic TBR queue of doom 🙂

    stalkers00(at)yahoo(dot)com

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Cris,
Yes, you certainly can. I know, it’s tough to pick sometimes! I enjoyed Abigail and Brooks, too. The way he and Bert kind of commiserated at times cracked me up, too.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  34. Yadira A. says:

All the couples in the BDB series have made me laugh a time or two, but most especially Rhage and Mary:)

    yadkny@hotmail.com

  35. Amy R says:

Hi Joyce – yes, Eve and Roarke make me laugh. I also love Julie James and Jill Shalvis books because their characters always have fun, witty banter between them! I haven’t read any of your books yet but have seen your name floating around the HEA blog/twitter! I look forward to checking out your books. Thanks!

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Amy!
I love Julie’s and Jill’s books, too. I just picked up the audio book of Julie’s Just the Sexiest Man Alive so I can enjoy it again without actually reading it. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

  36. winnie says:

Cat and Bones are my favourites, but I also agree about Eve and Roarke and all the BDB couples! 🙂

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Winnie!
Jeaniene Frost is pretty entertaining herself. Not that that should be surprising, considering the high amusement factor of Cat and Bones. But I love finding out that authors who write fun books are also really fun to hang out with.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  37. Rachel R says:

Stephanie Plum and her band of love lorn can always get a laugh out of me

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Rachel!
Yeah, Stephanie never lets me down. And we can always count on her to blow up or otherwise destroy a vehicle, too. : )
      Thanks for saying hi!

Oh, yeah, I love the Darynda Jones books. Who would have thought the Grim Reaper could be so much fun?
      Thanks for stopping by!

  39. bn100 says:

The Lords of the Underworld characters are funny, especially William.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, bn100!
Oh, yeah! Have you seen Gena Showalter’s Dating the Undead magazine parody? That is a hoot! I still giggle over that. She and Jill Monroe did a really fun interview at Happy Ever After when that came out. So fun.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  40. Na S. says:

So many of Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s characters make me smile, along with Kristan Higgins and Bones from the Night Hunstress series. I find sense of humor an important and fun trait to have.

    • Joyce says:

      Hi, Na!
So nice to see you here! I agree on the sense of humor. I can’t imagine how dull and boring and sad life would be without a good sense of humor.
      Thanks for saying hi!

  41. Jane says:

Congrats on the new release, Joyce. I can’t think of any specific couples right now, but Susan Donovan and Julie James always makes me laugh.

  42. Hilleary Peterson says:

BDB Vischous and Doc Jane. You never know what will be said. Vischous is such a wisecracker. You can always count on him. Alot of the guys in that series are like that. I would choose them as a group and the heroines keep them in check

  43. Fedora says:

The ones who make me laugh are the best, Joyce! I love the couples in Amanda Quick’s Ravished, many of Julia Quinn’s Bridgertons, Shelly Laurenston’s stories, SEP, Jennifer Crusie’s books… so many of my favorite stories can make me smile if not laugh outright. 🙂 Looking forward to Bailey and Cole’s story!

  50. Michelle McMichael says:

Nalini Singh’s Hawke & Sienna always make me smile. I do love Roarke & Eve too.
