Gotta Love Those Series Back to Blog

Update: Lauren’s winner is…Jamie Birdwell! Congrats, Jamie!!

My name is Lauren Dane and I admit it, I love series. Reading and writing them.

Lucky for me, my readers love them too so I get to write more of them. I love to write a series of books with the characters’ connection to one another as the uniting theme. My Chase Brothers for instance, or the spin off series from my Cascadia Wolves, de La Vega Cats.

Cascadia Wolves was my first series featuring shifters as main characters. I love the Warden family and their mates and I had a great deal of fun writing the books in the Pellini story arc.

I haven’t stopped writing about that world though, because I do love it and because it’s big enough for me to spin off to other packs and other paranormal characters.

Which is what I did with TRINITY.

TRINITY finally gave one of my favorite characters from the Cascadia Wolves series, Jack, his HEA with Renee, a witch and Galen, a jaguar shifter. It started a whole new group of stories and characters, while retaining a connection to Cascadia.

I loved stepping from the world of wolves into the world of cats. I love shifters in general, but cats were newer territory so I got to build an entire culture to give Galen and his family context.

I love writing wolves, but big cats have proven to be just as fun to write. A cat moves with power and grace. A cat can be silly and definitely lazy. Even jaguars like to lay around in the sunshine.

TRINITY was also the start of a two book story arc. The story of Renee and Kendra’s past, of what happened to their mother and why will conclude by the end of REVELATION.

In REVELATION I make the full shift to the world of big cat shifters, with the de La Vega family at the center. We learn more about Max and Galen’s family as Kendra, Renee’s sister and the heroine of the book, falls in love with Max and spends time with them.

I’ve fallen in love with Boston and my cats, with the National Pack wolves and the witches we’ve met and will continue to as the series moves forward. I hope you all do too! If you’d like to read an excerpt or blurb for either book, the book covers will take you to the pages at my website!

Do you like series? If so, got any favorites? Do you stick to certain genres?

I’ve got a digital copy of TRINITY and a digital ARC of REVELATION to give away to one winner chosen from the comments below.

Thanks for having me,

Lauren

I love series too. Brenda Novak The Last Stand series and Stillwater Trilogy. And she has 3 new ones coming out. I am just finding other authors series that I haven’t got to read yet. I love a story that really grabs you from the beginning. I was sticking to the ones and than I found more I liked of differant kinds.

  8. Tina says:

I have read parts of you wolves series. I think what always will draw me to a book of yours is the heart and soul of the characters. I have picked up contemporaries from you as well as para normals and the one thing that always makes me happy I did is the heart and souls of your character, they always touch me and make me want to find more of your work, it is nice to be transported and fall in love too.

  9. DYRomance says:

I do like a series….not one of those 28 book long ones. But a good series with up to 8 or 9 books. Fav’s are Gabaldon’s Outlander, KMM’s Highlander and Fever Series, Carriger’s Parasol Protectorate, and I am getting ready to start on Ward’s BDB series. Love a good series!

  12. kylie says:

I love series – I think it’s almost expected now. It’s such a treat to find out what happens to charismatic supporting characters who finally get the spotlight and to catch glimpses of the post HEAs. As far as genre, I’ve mostly followed JR Ward, Nalini Singh, Kresley Cole and a couple other new paranormal or uf.

  13. Lauren Dane says:

Cynthia – thanks for having me today!

Kylie – As an author, I find it nearly irresistible not to fall in love with secondary characters as I write. I can’t help myself sometimes, LOL.

    Lindsay – Me either!

Edie – Love Cynthia’s books too. I am lucky enough to get early peeks from time to time 🙂

DYRomance – I generally like 4 and under, but that’s me. Now, JD Robb has done 20+ and she still manages to write a great book with great character growth each time.

Tina – what a lovely compliment, thank you!

Sue – I have several of hers in my TBR pile. I really need to move them up.

Thanks for the posting, Lauren. I enjoy series because you can revisit characters from previous stories that you liked. It is great when you can find out what happens after heroes/heroines find their mates and when secondary characters have main roles and you find out more about them. There are many wonderful series out there and I have had the pleasure of reading some of them including Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville’s series, Sookie Stackhouse by Charlaine Harris, Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J R Ward, Morgan Kingsley series by Jenna Black, Mercy Thompson books by Patricia Briggs, Love at Stake series by Kerrelyn Sparks, The Guild Hunters by Nalini Singh, Rachel Morgan stories by Kim Harrison, Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian, Nikki Styx books by Terri Garey, Dark series by Christine Feehan and the Sherrilyn Kenyon series to name just a few.

Colleen – yeah, there’s that, LOL

I also love series. There is nothing like returning to a favourite world and it’s characters. Currently reading Web of Lies and really enjoying this series. I read a wide variety of books so while really enjoy fantasy it is not the only genre I read. Love the Jack Reacher series by Lee Childs. One of the earliest series I read was the Silver Brumby books by Elyne Mitchell. Currenlty actually trying to repurchase these lol.

  34. Christine says:

I think series are my favorite books to read. I love the continuity. And I love that we get to revisit old characters and see what they are up to. Number One has be the in death series by JD Robb. Can’t ever get enough of Eve and Roarke and I don’t think I ever will. Love Nalini Singh’s new Arch Angels Series. Very Interesting. And two main charaacters all around chemistry is amazing. Shelly Laurenston’s Pride Series, Christine Feehan’s Drake Sisters, Jayne Ann Krentz’s has two series that great the Arcane Society & the Harmony Series. And of course your Cascadia Wolves is one of my all time favorites. But I would be here all day naming them.

I love series books and seeing characters evolve throughout each new book. It’s like being a member of the family and watching individuals grow up. Some of my favorites are Ward’s BDB, Harris’ Southern Vampires, and Carrie Vaughn’s Kitty Norville books to name a few.

  37. cories says:

I, too, enjoy reading books in a series. I love the glimpse of what happens after the HEA. Also, like any good friend/relative, I want HEAs for the other characters in a series.

    Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson
Jayne Castle/Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick’s Arcane Society (and any other books she writes, really)
    Terry Pratchett’s Discworld
    Piers Anthony’s Xanth
    Nancy Atherton’s Aunt Dimity

  38. Donna Fisk says:

I like series books, but not more than stand alone books. I have enjoyed Feehan’s Dark Series, and Kate Douglas’ Chanku.

  39. Tracey D says:

I do love series. For a while, I only read paranormal series, like J.R. Ward, D.N. Simmons and Lynsay Sands.

Then I discoverd Jim Butcher, Diana Gabaldon, and Greg Keyes. I could list more, but I’ll stop…

  40. azteclady says:

I like series, yes, a lot! I like those that manage to remain fresh through a number of books–and the idea of reinventing the series (following a second story arc or, as in your case, a different group of characters in the same general world) is very attractive to me.

Generally speaking, I tend to read series from authors whose work I’ve already enjoyed, more than series in a genre… does that make sense?

  41. Michele says:

I love series!!! Just love the connection between the books and the glimpses into past characters and where they are now. Few series I have enjoyed, Lora Leigh and her Breed series, Christine Feehan and her Dark series and Cynthia Eden’s Midnight series. Enjoying both the Breed and Dark series, but just seems so long in between books and now there are so many. Like how Cynthia’s ended after 3 🙂

  42. Nikki says:

I love reading series….My favorite right now is Rhyannon Bryds “Primal Instinct” series. I do tend to stick to paranormal romance…shifters, demons, vampires….bring em on!

  43. Alisha says:

    Your Cascadia Wolves Series 😉
    Ghostwalker Series – Christine Feehan
Anita Blake Series – Laurell K Hamilton

Immortals After Dark Series – Kresley Cole
Wild Irish Series – Mari Carr
    Pride Series – Shelly Laurenston
    Dragon Series – G.A. Aiken
………that’s all I can think of at the moment.

  44. Diane Sadler says:

Yes I do enjoys series, however I’m talking about three or four books no more. And no, I’m not picky about the genre just as long as it’s a short series.

  45. I love series and faithfully read several. Here are a few:

  47. Stephanie G says:

These sound great. I love series’ because they give you time to really know characters. At the top of my list would be the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Even though some books aren’t as good as others, I LOVE the brothers.

  48. Scott says:

Love series. Although it is hard to jump into the middle of it, so i have to research where it started and find book one.

    These books sound great

  49. Mariska says:

Yep, i love series, from Jeri Smith-Ready WVMP series, Demonica series by Larissa Ione, Twilight saga series 🙂 just love them !

  50. JenM says:

Even though I hate waiting for new installments, it seems like series (or at least loosely connected books) are 90% of what I read these days. However, I like to wait until there are at least two or three books out before I start. I love it when there are back to back releases over a couple of months or several in one year. If I have to pick favorites, I guess I’d pick Kate Daniels, both of Patricia Briggs’ series, and the BDB.
