Best. Monster. Ever. Back to Blog

Update: The winner of the Barnes and Noble gift card is…Dana Gold!

My life-long love of monsters inspires my writing. Seriously, if I hadn’t watched so many horror movies as  a child, I doubt I’d be writing about vampires and werewolves today.  What can I say? Monsters motivate me. Only…instead of being the bad guys, I often love to make my monsters into heroes.  Who says the beast can’t save beauty? I think he can.

So that got me to thinking…just who/what is the best monster ever? A beast that was supposed to be bad, but you still found yourself rooting for him anyway?

Spike comes to mind for me (of course!), but there are other supernatural guys out there who have to make the list, too.   My husband says that Frankenstein’s Monster is far and away the best, but I don’t know about that.  Never quite loved the whole electrode bit.

What do you think? If you had to make a list, who/what would top it for the title of Best Monster Ever?

I’ll pick one commenter to win a $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble.  (And please remember–all contests will stay open until noon, Central time, on 8/29/12.)

I’ve always felt bad for Jaws…she was just a hungry fish looking for a snack or two:)

  8. Anne R says:

oh spike would be a good one. I have never been one for monsters, horror stories but I loved Lost Boys as a kid..all of those hunky boys vamps. I want one of those.

  9. Pam P says:

Angel and Spike, though I agree with others about Rumplestiltsken in Once Upon a Time.

  10. Lexi says:

One big bad monster/villain I loved watching was Viktor in the Underworld movies. He was ruthless and unforgivable, yet I still could see part of him that had a heart and wished it could have turned out differently for him.

  11. ELF says:

I’m not big on horror films but must say that I like Godzilla and Gamera.

  12. Cynthia Eden says:

Phantom of the Opera, King Kong, Dracula, Viktor…Rumplestiltsken–so many awesome “Monsters” listed! Thank you!

  13. Nancy Gilliland says:

My favorite was always Christopher Lee’s version of Dracula.

  14. Angel…without his soul LOL

  15. Barb P says:

I would have to go with Godzilla or the Phantom of the Opera! I always end up rooting for them. Although I always felt sympathetic towards Frank Langella’s Dracula!

  16. Krissy Holstein says:

I have to go with the vampire on this one…Dracula!!

  17. Na S. says:

Dracula! He scared me growing up.

  18. Tracy says:

I always Loved Spike the bad boys need loving too!!!

  19. May says:

Phantom of the Opera? I enjoyed the musical a lot!

  20. Cris says:

Have to agree with Spike. Or Dracula. They should have a vampire cage match 😛

  21. Stacey Marin says:

    Lestat..would he count? Hehe

  22. Cynthia C says:

Who doesn’t love Spike? He just had so much fun being bad. I think that is what makes a monster more memorable, when they have fun with it as seen recently with Russell Edgington of True Blood.

Also, being terrified sticks with you as well. I just remember my older sisters making me watch Salem’s Lot as a kid and being scared silly. I also scared myself by watching Event Horizon all by myself at 1am in the dark.

  23. Sandy M says:

I hate horror movies! LOL I think the monster that put me in that mode for life is that horrible jerk running around with a chainsaw in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, which I saw while in college. Scared the living hell out of me (along with all those college guys chasing the girls around, all the while sounding like a chainsaw) and I never wanted to see another horror film ever. Those were also the days of Jason and Freddy. Those three are my monsters under the bed!

  24. Freddy. I watched one of his movies at too young of of an age and I have been terrified ever since. I have to run up basement stairs if all the lights are off. One of my ex’s had an outfit like his and when I would watch him drive off at night after dropping me home, I would be scared. All I could see was a shadow of Freddy.

  25. Mariee says:

Frankenstein, from the 1994 movie with Robert De Niro.

  26. Danah says:

Vishous & Zsadist for J R Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Sexy & Dangerous

  27. infinitieh says:

Rumpelstiltskin! I always felt sorry for him. He didn’t need to help the miller’s daughter and she stiffed him.

  28. Michelle Harlan says:

My favorite was Dracula…the only “horror” movie I’d watch in my teens.

  29. bn100 says:

    Phantom of the Opera

  30. Kimh says:

    Godzilla yep big and scary

  31. June says:

I would probably have to go with Dracula, because he was the first character that made me fall in love with paranormal creatures. I grew up watch horror movies (all the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, etc) movies along with vampire movies and later on many other scary/horror characters.

  32. Laura McLendon says:

Heathcliff in “Wuthering Heights”, come on he was a beast of a man!!

  33. Yvonne B. says:

    Oy….decisions, decisions.

    Book-wise, for me it’s a three-way tie: Dracula, Frankenstein*, and Eric/Phantom

Movie-wise, forget the name of the movie, but it was a shark – nope, not Jaws (though did like it). Think Aaron Eckhart played a scientist of some sort that developed (non-Great White) beasties and at least one of them got loose.

*Great spoof (in a bad enough to be good-at least IMO-way was “Prometheus Rising”)

  34. wolfwattitude says:

The black and white version of Dracula is the best monster. It scared me as a child and I still have a fascination with vampires.

  35. Susie says:

As I was reading the post I thought Spike just before I read that he was your idea of the best lol. I am currently on a Buffy marathon break from reading, so naturally he was on my mind. And of coarse Beast from “Beauty and the Beast”, I mean who didn’t root for him even though he kidnapped Belle lol. Also I saw mention the Phantom from “Phantom of the Opera” Who wouldn’t feel bad for Gerard Butler? Yumm 🙂

  36. Lindsey E says:

I always liked the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. Saw the 30’s French version multiple times at a child and it was sad when the Beast was dying.

  37. Hey Cynthia! 😀

Here is my very long list of Monsters I love to read about in order of how they rank in my mind 😀

    1. Vampires & Werewolf
    2. Angel
    3. Witch/Wizard
    4. Demon/She Demon
    5. Shifters
    6. Succubus
    7. Pixie
    8. Siren
    9. Djinn
    10. Ghosts
    11. Gods/Goddess

BUT my fav Monster has to be the Loch Ness Monster because I’m Scottish 😛

    Kind Regards,

  38. Caila says:

Spike was the first that came to my mind too but I also like the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid.

  39. Amber Schaber says:

I would have to second your nomination of Spike. I loved watching that show as I was growing up and always thought he was phenomenal. And with the British accent? What’s not to love? The other one that comes to mind is Jean-Claude from the Anita Blake series by Laurell Hamilton. It’s the time I tend to fund myself rooting for the vampire over the werewolf.

  40. Eileen says:

I once read a story about a were-spider and have been captivated by the idea ever since. I’d love to be able to climb the walls!

  41. Anne says:

Spike is best sexy monster, best scary (though Spike had his momemnts)was the original Dracula.

  42. Jenese L says:

I love PNR but can’t for the life of me watch scary movies! lol But fav monster, I saw some good ones, Dracula and Phantom of the Opera are surely at the top of my list.

  43. Jen says:

I’m going to pick a current monster and say Russell Edgington in True Blood.

  44. Nareh says:

    Godzilla
