Best. Monster. Ever. Back to Blog

Update: The winner of the Barnes and Noble gift card is…Dana Gold!

My life-long love of monsters inspires my writing. Seriously, if I hadn’t watched so many horror movies as  a child, I doubt I’d be writing about vampires and werewolves today.  What can I say? Monsters motivate me. Only…instead of being the bad guys, I often love to make my monsters into heroes.  Who says the beast can’t save beauty? I think he can.

So that got me to thinking…just who/what is the best monster ever? A beast that was supposed to be bad, but you still found yourself rooting for him anyway?

Spike comes to mind for me (of course!), but there are other supernatural guys out there who have to make the list, too.   My husband says that Frankenstein’s Monster is far and away the best, but I don’t know about that.  Never quite loved the whole electrode bit.

What do you think? If you had to make a list, who/what would top it for the title of Best Monster Ever?

I’ll pick one commenter to win a $20 gift card to Barnes and Noble.  (And please remember–all contests will stay open until noon, Central time, on 8/29/12.)

I have to go with the original Wolfman with Lon Chaney, Junior. His portrayal of the tortured Larry Talbot was both romantic and dark.

  2. Kim W. says:

What about Kaus from Vampire Diaries? He is so YUMMY! In a bad way, I mean.

  3. Mina De Caro says:

I know Dracula was evil, but still…. I just can’t help wanting to meet him.

Rumpelstiltskin. Have been watching the series Once Upon a
Time. Love that character, never sure which way he’s going to go. But I just feel sorry for him. The phantom of the opera. He is so tragic and I really feel sorry for him. All he wants is to be loved.

  8. Elizabeth H. says:

For me, best monster was always Freddy Kruger.

  9. Sherry says:

I love Rumplestilskin on Once Upon a Time. You just know he was hurt in his past and thats what made him the way he is today.

  10. Marianne says:

Best monster to me is Freddy, but a root for monster would be Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

  14. LSUReader says:

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is tops for me.

  15. Rachel R says:

Beast from Beauty and the Beast. He was a creature that everyone fear but was able to turn good for the one he loved. Plus many people take inspiration from the story for a vampire or werewolf novel. How could you not love that? 🙂

  16. Glittergirl says:

Oh I don’t watch horror movies…give me nightmares!
So I guess I don’t have a good answer for you on this one unless Beauty and The Beast or yah, the guy on the Dark Angel series, yah know I always for the bad guy that’s really good inside…

  17. kimberleyc says:

I have to say I loved Frank Langella’s Dracula! and there is always Jack Nicolson’s werewolf in WOLF

  18. CrystalGB says:

My choice would be the Beast in Beauty in the Beast. 🙂

  19. CrystalGB says:

That should be Beauty and the Beast.

  20. I would say Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (even though she’s technically not a monster but still a villain), always gave me the creeps (and even nightmares when I was a kid), and Spike and Angelus are good ones as well.

  21. Rhonda S. says:

    Both Spike and Angel

  22. Chelsea B. says:

Best monster that I found myself rooting for? Oh, so many! I always root for the bad guy 😉
Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon A Time, The Beast from Beauty and the Beast… Just to name a few 🙂

Well, this is hard for me because I have never watched horror movies so my list of monsters is kinda limited. I always loved watching the TV show the Munsters and my favorite was always Herman. So I guess I will go with him! He was always so clumsy and funny!

You know you haven’t red as widely as you believed when…

    …this question totally confuzzles you.

I can’t really think of that many monsters in literature–and I’m not a fan of horror (movies or books) so…

But I’ll say that I’ve always loved the idea of shape shifters (with werewolves the first to come to mind, heh) as three-dimensional characters, instead of the whole “shifts with the moon, has no control over his blood lust, killer on the loose.” So I think I’ll go with that one 😀

  30. Jane says:

The best monster is Pinhead from Hellraiser.

  31. catslady says:

I always loved Beauty and the Beast. That just had to be true love – ignoring the superficial for what really mattered.

I’m still creeped out by the Nosferatu looking vampire in the TV production of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. That guy gave me nightmares for weeks after the show aired.
