Update:  Juliana is going to send one commenter a copy of MIDNIGHT’S MASTER. Now, yes, I may be a bit biased, but I think that is an awesome prize! Thanks, Juliana!

Today, I’m happy to have Juliana Stone as my guest for demon fun.  Juliana is an author on my watch list.  🙂  Next April, the first book in her Jaguar paranormal series will be published by Avon, and, in case that series just wasn’t enough, the woman is working on a YA story, too. Busy, busy.  Welcome, Juliana!!

What Is It About These Bad Boys?

Several months ago, I decided to write a young adult book. This has been a dream of mine for a few years now. When I met my agent in fact, I had told her my goal was to be published in both adult and young adult paranormal. These are the two types of books I most enjoy reading, so it made sense.

Earlier this year I had some time before I needed to dive back into my second Jaguar Warrior book, so I decided to bring my vision of a young adult novel to life.

I had an idea, a story about a young angel who decides she no longer wants to observe humans silently from the shadows. She wants to be human. So, she makes a deal. With a demon. He will help her escape the upper realm and live as a human for one full year and in exchange, well, as with all demons, she’ll owe him.

This is how my young adult book, Ravyn’s Fall began. I had envisioned Ravyn becoming involved with a cute, hot, human boy. I would need to add some sort of conflict of course, but this is where the story had originally headed.

Then I started writing. In the first chapter I have a brief moment with Ravyn and the demon, Ezekiel. (Both of these characters are teens in human form) It was a small interaction between the two of them, but it changed the focus of the story.

My demon, was charismatic, totally hot, dark, dangerous, arrogant, did I say hot? And being a demon, of course he was bad. What more could a teenage girl want? Zeke (Ezekiel) came to life in such a way that he became the focus. He had layers, depth and truthfully? My demon Ezekiel could kick Edward Cullen’s ass from here to hell and back.

In an instant he became the hero, or anti-hero and my human boy never even made it to the page. Ezekiel brought an excitement to the story and it’s much stronger because of him. I do love me some demon!

What is it about these dark, tortured souls that call to us? Is it the “I can save him” factor? The bad boy thing? The thrill of the forbidden? And why do demons make the perfect foil for all of these scenarios?

Hey, if Zeke could kick Edward Cullen’s ass from here to hell and back, I want to meet him!:o) I soooo like your demon. Tamsyn

  2. Edie says:

Juliana, I love it when a character comes alive like that. I don’t know why bad boys are so sexy. Maybe they have more testosterone than the good ones. We think they’re good breeders, though they might not stick around to be good fathers.

  3. Pamk says:

lol sounds like a great story. And one my kiddos could read which is great. Love to share stories with them.

  4. delitealex says:

I think it’s the thrill of the forbidden. You always want something you shouldn’t have. Wow Zeke sounds like a great character.

  5. danni says:

It sounds like a story that I really want to read. Zeke definitely sounds hot!! Can’t wait to read.

  6. CrystalGB says:

Zeke sounds great. I think what draws up to dark, tortured souls is a combination of the thrill of the forbidden, the fact that he is a bad boy and that they tempt us to be naughty.

  7. Melissa says:

Oh, I’m so glad the Demon turned out to be the hero, lol. I was already thinking that before I read it.
    I love bad boys!!

  8. Jamie Birdwell says:

Oh I love me some bad boys!! I love the tough, naughty exterior. Your books sound so good. I will have to put them on my wish list.

  9. elaing8 says:

    Ravyn’s Fall sounds really good.
please count me in on the giveaway.

  10. Nathalie says:

Bad boys make things a lot more interesting. I love reading about characters like Zeke!

  11. I Juliana,

I love the concept of your YA novel. I’m not a YA and don’t have any at home but I do enjoy a good teen novel sometimes as a break from the books I do read. I’m not sold on Twlight like everyone else though I do love PC and Kristen Cast’s House of Night series.

What is the name of your jaguar paranormal coming out soon? I will definitely have to check that out.

and BTW, I do love bad boys.

  12. Raonaid Luckwell says:

I think it’s a little bit of all that… though starting out it might be the want to “help” them but then once you try, you realize that they’d be normal.

  13. Cheryl McInnis says:

Julianna, I think that a demon makes a really great hero in a YA novel especially because younger women are so much more drawn to the excitement and thrill of a “Bad Boy”. It’s all about the passion and drama. It’s when we get old and responsible *sigh* that we ( by we, I obviously mean ME ) realize that we actually want a man who is dependable
and will share diaper duty-and we then get our thrills from books about demons!

  14. Hi Juliana & Cynthia,
I have not read to many YA books, but I think it is great that you are writing both. I love reading paranormals and demons are becoming my new fav, and think this would be a great way to connect with my younger sisters (they are preteen….I am not). We could both share a new author 🙂 Do you have a title for the YA series and/or expected release dates?

  15. adela says:

cant wait to read this book

  16. Michele says:

    Hi Juliana!

Wow, Ravyn’s Fall sounds great!!!! Love hearing how the story developed for you, how you were going with one angle and as you developed the characters you went a totally different way. There is just something about demons, they are already casted in a bad light and for them to redeem themselves through actions, who doesn’t love that 😀

Do you have a tentative date set when we can expect to see Ravyn’s Fall to hit bookshelves?

  17. Angela says:

what is about these demons? For me it’s the bad boy factor and the sex scenes. If the hero is a demon you know whats coming 😀 LOL

Ravyn’s Fall sounds great by the way 🙂

  18. Llehn says:

We are women. We want to nurture. And yes, we think we can save them all, and that’s why bad boys appeal to us even though we know they’re not good for us!

  19. Larena Wirum says:

I love the sound of this book.

I think the attraction with demons is that we are always told how evil they are and they are the ulitmate in forbidden. It is a way to live on the wildside so to speak. 🙂

  20. Jean P says:

Who doesn’t love the bad boy, can’t wait to read this one

  21. blodeuedd says:

Bad boys are just bad, save them, well i like them bad and wicked. Nice to me, but otherwise just bad and yummy 😉

  22. Lillie A. says:

I love the “bad boy” attitude, and demons have the power to back it up!

  23. Donna S says:

Your story sounds great. I cant wait to find out more and see it released.

  24. Amy says:

Sounds great. Can’t wait for the release.

  25. Alexa says:

I love bad boys and demons are the ultimate bad boys. I like them because they’re mysterious and forbidden.

  26. Pam S says:

Juliana, ty so much for sharing :).

Your YA sounds awesome… Ezekiel sounds like a character that will be remembered for sure.

The Jaguar series sounds interesting too, can’t wait to find out more on it.

As to your questions on what it is about demons.. I see its all that you listed lol.

    Congrats on your upcoming releases!

  27. Brandy says:

I think bad boys appeal to us on many levels. But, the biggest thing that appeals is the “is there SOME good in him?”

  28. Hey everyone! I’m chuckling because as women, we’re automatically attracted to the bad boy, but like some of you have said, there does need to be something good in there as well. If not, then what’s the point?

And I’m really excited to see such a positive response to Ravyn’s Fall. As of now, it’s still with my agent, so I’m going to cross my fingers and hope that we strike gold again!

My Jaguar Warriors series debuts next April from Avon. I have a blurb up on my webstie from the first book. It’s going to be called HIS DARKEST HUNGER, something I just found a week or so ago!

Just want to thank Cynthia for having me, and keep the comments coming. My daughter will help me choose a winner and as soon as I get my hands on a hot little copy of Midnight’s Master I will ship it to some lucky winner!

  29. Minna says:

It must be the bad boy thing.

  30. Fedora says:

Definitely all of the above, Juliana! A bad boy is exciting because he breaks/makes his own rules, and invites you to live on the wild side with him. And of course you want to be the one to bring him to his knees!

  31. Jane says:

I think most want to be the one who saves the tortured hero from himself and makes his demons go away.

  32. Susan says:

I think every bad boy has that ‘something’ that draws us to to them.

  33. Lindsey Ekland says:

A demon with an angel, how can readers resist? Love the bad boy and his path to redemption.

  34. Sej says:

Dang!! YAs everywhere are gonna love this book! It sounds verrry interesting and yah Zeke’s gotta be the hero, there’s no way a human boy can compete with the sexiness of Zeke. So I’m looking forward to your hot Jaguar novels!

  35. Jacqueline L. says:

“My demon Ezekiel could kick Edward Cullen’s ass from here to hell and back.”

    Eeeeeexcellent! 😀

“What is it about these dark, tortured souls that call to us? Is it the “I can save him” factor? The bad boy thing? The thrill of the forbidden?”

I believe the answer is, “Yes.” HA!

  36. Diane Sadler says:

your y/a book sounds great. And my daughter will love it I’m sure
Bad boys? Of course! the forbidden. The knowing your mother would disapprove, the thrill of sharing all your in with your girlfriends. And when you’re older? Bad boy, the forbidden, knowing your daughter would disapprove! Oh yes, the bad boy.

  37. Barb Patrick says:

Hi Juliana! I personally think that the answer is … ALL OF THE ABOVE!!! All of these things make my heart go pitter pat and make it beat faster. Bring It!!!! Can’t wait for your Jaguar books.

  38. Rena M. says:

I like the sound of Zeke! I’ll keep my eye out for it when it hits the shelves!!

  39. Cari Quinn says:

Great blog! I so can’t wait to read Ravyn’s Fall! And yes, I’m one of those who likes a bad boy, especially one who’s just been waiting for his “good” woman. Redemption can be very hot. 😉

    Midnight’s Master sounds terrific, Cynthia!

  40. Janet H says:

All of the posts sound like the reasons we love bad boys. And we do love love love them, no matter the whys and whatevers.

  41. Beth Kery says:

Hi Juliana! As you know, I think Ravyn’s Fall sounds fabulous. The ‘something’ about the bad boy for me is that there’s the chance the heroine can really see into his depths and ‘get’ something maybe he doesn’t comprehend. The heroine creates the light in the darkness just by ‘seeing’ that quality of the hero. That’s powerful stuff.

  42. Lea says:

    Hi Juliana:

Wonderful post. Your YA book sounds excellent. As for the call of the “tortured soul”, I think it is all of the above, depending on the reader.

We like to see the heroine “redeem” him. We like to see the bad boy fall hard for that special someone. And, we like to see that tortured soul healed. IMHO anyway.

Thanks for the giveway offer – Cynthia’s books are awesome.

I’m going to be looking up you adult stories. 😉

    Best
    Lea

  43. Cheryl (B)S says:

Definitely the bad boy thing & the thrill of the forbidden!

Ravyn’s Fall looks like a great read & the characters seem interesting.

  44. Cathy M says:

It’s all about redemption and the thought that love can bring forth the man that will love forever and unconditionally.

  45. sara hhurt says:

I think it is definetly the thrill of the forbidden but for most of them they have that dark sexy appeal that just turns ya to mush.

  46. Jennifer Dorough says:

LOL it’s all of the above! They go hand in hand when talking about HOT demons! Love the concept.

  47. Sandy M says:

OMG, it’s all of those! And just being women, we want to make it better, nurture a poor damaged soul, among other things, of course!

  48. Really, I now have a new author to put on my wishlist.
As for your question, I think the lure of a demon is taming that evil, walking the line between safe and dangerous, the ability to heal the bad in a demon’s heart and soul and show him instead the good thats waiting for him on the other side.

  49. Lori T says:

    Hi Julianna~
Oh my goodness, I am going to have to add you to my must buy list.

I think that the appeal of the bad boy is the dangerous edge and the mysterious appeal. I do like my bad boy to have some redeeming aspect to them, and that is why I think that demons are the rise…as they seem to have it all.

  50. I want to thank Cynthia for having me. This was fun! I used a randomizer thingy and the winner of a copy of Cynthia’s book, Midnight’s Master is Lea. Please email me at my website with all your info!
