Not a BIAW, I’m doing a NIAW Back to Blog
I often read about writers participating in BIAW–Book In A Week events. The very idea intrigues me…writing a whole book…in a single week. Now, I’m assuming that it is just writing–no editing. And you just write as fast and as furiously as you can.
Oh, yeah…I’m interested by the idea, but I’ve never been brave enough to actually join in for a BIAW. Why? Simple–I don’t think I can do it!!!
I like to think I’m a fast writer. When I’m motivated (key word: motivated), I average about five pages in an hour. Luckily, I’m a pretty fast typer ( 70 net words per minute according to this handy typing test), but I just don’t think I can pull off a whole book in a week.
After typing about 20 pages in a day, I tend to feel mentally wiped. Doing more than 20…I’m afraid that just might be too much. (Oh, yeah, I’m a big o’ coward!)
But the idea is so very tempting…
So, I think I’ll do a compromise. I won’t do a book in a week–I’ll do a novella in a week–a NIAW. Approximately 100-120 pages are needed for a novella. I can easily do my twenty pages a day and finish in a week…hopefully.
My plan is to start this new project on Monday. I’ll give it a go and post to let you know how my NIAW is going.
If anyone else wants to try (Ashley, Felecia–you ladies know you owe me novellas!), then join in! And post your progress with me.

A nowhatta? I have no idea what you’re talking about!
This is why you’re my hero. You not only set goals, you actually DO something to make them happen. Any by the way, isn’t that handsome stud on the RIGHT in the picture below Jack? I think that’s Nick on the LEFT. Made some more of that jello with hard lemonade, didn’t ya!
Aw…Fuzz…don’t be coy–you know what it is…and deep, down (way down), you know you want to do one with me.
And I don’t consider little Jack to be in the stud category yet–sure, one day he’ll grow up and be all handsome like his dad. But til then…he’s just my little sweet snookums. So when I said on the right…I just meant the pic was to the right of the text.
By the way, little Jack sure misses his Auntie Fuzz…and he hasn’t forgotten her birthday!!! In fact, he’s got her present with a nice, big bow on it, just waiting…
Cynthia, a Book in a Week session doesn’t necessarily mean a whole book in a week 🙂 I also thought that when I first heard of them, but what is really is is you set a challenging goal for yourself, and its purely personal, whatever will stretch YOU, and then you give you goal to the moderator and she keeps track on a daily basis for a week. In one BIAW I did, someone really did try to do a book in a week, but she didn’t manage it. My crit group has a different name for it, Ass in the Chair week. Sometimes we have an Ass in the Chair month. It’s a good way to stay focused, and yes, the competitive nature comes to the fore 🙂
Me, too LOL. I couldn’t conceive of it, and still can’t, actually. My suspicion is that a book written in a week probably wouldn’t be worth reading 🙂
