Countdown to Halloween Back to Blog
I absolutely love Halloween. Probably not as much as the fabulous Cynthia Eden who is awesome for letting me hang out at her blog today. Thanks Cynthia! When I was a kid my parents were really weird about letting us trick or treat. Or rather not letting us partake in those particular festivities. Instead we usually went to one of the local churches and got candy, cupcakes, etc. and played games at the yearly Fall Festival. Or we had a friend who owned a ranch and they set up hayrides, horse rides, and we all got to take turns at beating on a piñata filled with candy. I was never a fan of the piñata game because I’m apparently not brutal enough to elbow and knee other kids to get my sugar and chocolate fix. I might throw some elbows nowadays for some really good chocolate but that’s another story.
Okay, back to this awesome holiday. While I love Halloween for a multitude of reasons—candy included—I really like dressing up. There’s something so fun about pretending to be something or someone else. I’ve been a lot of things over the years but my earliest Halloween memory is dressing up like a crayon. My sister and I were giant red and green crayons (don’t know what’s up with the Christmas colors) and even though I can’t find a picture, we were very cute!
Now that I’m older my costumes aren’t as hard to make (I’m not as creative with a sewing machine as my mom was) but they’re still fun. Over the past few years I’ve been a bachelorette (like from the show…I basically wore a sash and carried a rose around), a beer wench, a pirate, a bloody bridesmaid, a tiger, an angel, and a ladybug. After all these years the crayon is probably still my favorite even though it was almost impossible to walk around in that thing. This year I’m likely going to recycle an old costume and be a beer wench again because come on, having the perfect excuse to walk around with a giant beer stein is awesome.
What’s your favorite Halloween costume or Halloween memory? Or why do you like this holiday so much? Leave a comment and be entered to win a copy of anything from my backlist.

Thanks so much for blogging with me, Katie!! So good to know I’m not the only Halloween addict!
Thanks for having me, Cynthia 🙂
My favorite costume for myself was a raggedy ann husband was andy. My favorite for my children-captain hook, peter pan and tinker bell. They were adorable.
Those are all really good, especially Raggedy Ann!
I bet you guys were adorable crayons! I love Halloween, too. When I was a kid I always wanted one of those cheesy princess costumes, but as an adult, I love being something scary. My favorite was Bride of Frankenstein. I made the costume myself and even teased up my naturally curly hair and sprayed on the white streaks. I think I was trying to get the knots out for weeks, but I had a great time.
That’s pure awesome! And I really want pictures of that 🙂
In my country Halloween is not celebrated, but I would like to get dressed as a witch, with a big nose and a broomstick!
Lucy
A witch is always fun and it’s easy to make too. My favorite kind of costume!
Oh, I love to go to parties and here in Germany the folks don’t really celebrate Halloween like you do in the US. I do have a very good friend, who is married to an American and they put on the best Halloween party. I always take part when they decorate their back yard and play the part of the witch who greets the kids and tries to persuade them to stay by her and be part of the soup she is cooking….wicked cackling….lol!!!
Yep, Halloween is fun with my friends.

That sounds like fun!
When I was little my grandmother made all of my costumes. My favorite was a Faery. She made my brother into a Knight that year. How my boys wished I had had her talent.
I wish I had that talent too 🙂 Those are great costumes!
I m more into Christmas than Halloween, but my kids ‘s costumes I enjoyed making: tomatoes, witches, princesses, skeleton, Ninja Turtle and ghost; those are just a few I made.
I’d like to be a skeleton one year too. I’m curious how you made that costume 🙂
My fav costume as a kid was this super hero girl… I loved wearing it and pretending I was a super hero! Now a days, I just paint something on my face… instead of costumes!
Happy October! 😀
I’d like to dress up as a super hero now, lol!
I like that the holiday is a fun holiday. There is no pressure to buy gifts or arrange family get togethers. There can be small or big decorating schemes and lots of candy. Chocolate makes everything better.
I second that! It’s wonderful not to have to worry about buying gifts and the decorating is always fun 🙂
I love Halloween for the costumes, the creature features and scary movies, the decorating, the candy and goodies, and the parties.
The scary movies and parties are definitely a plus!
Hmmm. My favorite costume is going to be the one I’m going to wear this year: sexy zombie. Yeah, to me that just sounds impressive. Because I have to be sexy and nasty at the same time.
Anything to do with zombies, I love 🙂
This used to be my kid’s favorite holiday, so my best memories are of them when they were small. Picking out costumes (and they are twin’s, so costumes HAD to be different), shopping for candy, (they each got to pick two bags of their favorites), trips to the pumpkin patch, scouring the neighborhood on Halloween for the best goodies, and then getting home to lay out every single piece on the living room carpet to organize them by shape and color. Those memories still make me smile.
I forgot about trips to the pumpkin patch! Those are so fun 🙂
Welcome Katie,
One of my favorite costumes was when I went as a fallen angel with a crooked halo. My favorite costume from childhood was Wonder Woman. I wish I still had my Lasso of Truth.
Wonder Woman is always a classic. Love it!
My favorite was a pregnant nun.
Haa! 🙂
A saucy pirate wench was my favorite. I”m really tempted to recycle it, now if I can only find those jolly roger bloomers.
I bet you were a sexy pirate wench 🙂
I liked being a witch. My husband informs me every year that I should actually dress up that just using my every day self isn’t enough 🙂
Your husband is very brave 😉
I’m going with my UF cat girl again, if I can find the right blade to strap to my thigh…
Very cool costume!
We always made my costumes. I was always either a cat or a cheerleader. 🙂 Mostly a cat because I could really wear anything-mostly a bodysuit though-and add a tail, some ears, and some facepaint then done. I still love cats to this day and I still use the nickname kitty. 🙂

That’s really cute! I was a tiger one year and did the whole face paint thing w/ the whiskers 😉
Hi Katie! I saw the picture of you as the beer wench and you were uber cute 🙂 You’d have fit right in at Octoberfest over in Munich.
Hope you have a great Halloween this year.

My favorite costume from when I was a kid was my 50’s girl outfit my made for my sis and me. Loved the poodle skirt and felt so fun in it. My mom use to dance 50’s style with us growing up and we loved listening to the oldies so dressing up in the ensemble was soo much fun and we got good use of the skirts for a good couple of years. I love Halloween and love it even more now that I have kids and making new memories with them. I go a little crazy decortating every year and doing spooky crafts with the kids that also get hung up evey year.
