Best Monsters? Back to Blog
If you were going to make a top ten list of monsters–well, who (what) would you put on that list? My list would probably go something like this:
10. Freddy Krueger (So scared me when I was a kid. Guess how many nights I kept my lights on?)
9. Michael Myers (I do consider him a monster–what do you think? I mean, he can’t *just* be a man–no way could a man like through all that!)
8. The Wolfman (And you know there’s a new Wolfman movie coming out…)
7. King Kong (Come on…didn’t you cry at the end of the movie, too?)
6. Hannibal Lecter. (Scary because he could be a real guy.)
5. Spike (Monster, but so sexy.)
4. Frankenstein (Another monster that made me care, and cry, dang it!)
3. Pinhead from Hellraiser (Gah! Just looking at him creeped me out, but later, if you were brave enough to follow a few of the Hellraiser films, you learned his back story–yep, he did a character evolution through Hellraiser.)
2. The Phantom (I’ll confess to having a bit of a crush on the Phantom.)
1. Dracula (He’s the king! The immortal king.)
Okay, that’s my list. My top ten monsters. Is there someone that should have been on the list (but isn’t)? Who would you put on your best monster list? I’ll pick one commenter to win a copy of the paranormal anthology, BELONG TO THE NIGHT.

Sully and Mike from Monsters Inc. are my favorites. They’re monsters with a heart. And funny, too. 🙂
To me, the best monsters are the scariest monsters — You know, the ones that induce night terrors.
Freddy Kruger (yup, he scared the sweet-dreams outta me, too!)
Terminator (he still lurks in my dreams, chasing me when unresolved issues crop up)
I have to agree with Jo K. The Terminator for sure. Truthfully, when I watched that movie, I had a nightmare knowing that someone after you just would not give up.
Dracula should be on the list too, but not of the sexy types we read about now. The original Dracula was pretty creepy and not in the least bit sexy. Imagine giving your life to an unattractive man, only to be staked later for your troubles 🙂
I’m not too familiar with slash-movie monsters as I don’t watch those. However, Freddy is pretty gross looking.
As for a nice-something supernatural, I’d list Casper from the movie and Thackery Binx the boy/cat from Hocus Pocus. Actually, the witches from that movie were good too even though they were ultimately nasty.
I was about….5 or 6. My brother brought home a movie, and I decided to watch it with him. He was…oh 19? I had nightmares for 2 years. To this day, werewolf movies make me cringe a bit, and anything truly horror, I can’t watch. What was that movie you ask? American werewolf in London. The old black and white? Yeah. No thanks.
HELLO??? The big momma alien monster in the Alien movies? with the extend-o jaws and mucuous everywhere? Scared me TO DEATH!
You forgot The Mummy, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Godzilla, Pennywise (the clown from the movie IT), Jigsaw (from the SAW movies), and Charles Manson. Serial killers. Can’t leave them out.
The only version of Dracula that is truly creepy is Max Schreck from the original Nosferatu. Very creepy looking. We also need to put Linda Blair when she’s possessed by Pazuzu on the list. She is truly terrifying and this movie is one that’s hard for me to watch more than the one time I did.
Oh, some good suggestions so far. And, yeah, I have a big crush on The Phantom…or could that be Gerard Butler? LOL!!!
So, I don’t watch a lot of monster movies, but you know, Johnny Depp did a marvellous job as Sweeny Todd!!!!

Beetlejuice.
Sweeny Todd is fantastic!!
Predator was one I didn’t particularly like, the first one with Arnold Schwarnegger.
Please don’t enter me in the contest, I already have the book and enjoyed it but wanted to participate in the blog.
Pinhead would be number one on my list. He still gives me the creeps.
What about Jason Voorhees, from Friday the 13th? Pretty creepy, I’d say….Awesome list! I just watched Dracula 2000 (with Gerard Butler, yum;) last night!
Freddy Kruger gave me nightmares for weeks after seeing the movies. Then there’s Pumpkinhead. Ugh. The first Pinhead movie I saw, was the night I met my husband. We were teenagers and had pizza, which I promptly gave to him. (I could not eat something with tomato sauce after watching that movie!)
As for friendly monsters, or monsters I have sympathy for? Definitely Frankenstein. He didn’t ask to be created, or to look so horrible. And like everyone-all he sought was love and acceptance. Ah, and Casper, too. He’s just too sweet! *G*
I don’t know his name, but the guy who played Imotep in the Mummy movies with Brendan Frasier. He was a creepy guy. Also Leatherface, Carrie, and if you want authors Stephen King.
The monsters themselves never really scare me, but the movies themselves scare me such as the original Halloween II movie where Jamie Lee Curtis is in the hospital (a very dark, empty hospital) and Michael Myers is chasing her. It made me nervous. The other one that made me nervous was The Strangers. The monsters were human with scary sacks or clear masks over their faces. Very nerve wracking! My daughter thinks 13 Ghosts was scary. As for monsters that we find scary–The headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow. And once in a Jaycee haunted house, a very scary wolfman chased us!
Really wasnt into to scary monsters, but i doo agree the guy who played Imotep in them mummy movies was my fav…also would the lost boys 2 count? they were scary. lol
I was never a monster fanatic because I am a big chicken butt when it comes to scary things. I dont watch horror movies of any kind or even suspense thrillers. My husband makes so much fun of me. I think this is one of the reasons I love romances so much. i am all for the HEA. but I do have to agree that Monsters Inc was a great movie. lol
Wow. There have been some great monsters posted here. My favorite all time will always be Frankenstein’s monster. He definitely made me care and his story really is a sad one. I’m not much into being scared, so my favorite monsters are all along the lines of loveable monsters, like Sully and Mike from Monsters, Inc. I do have to agree, though, that werewolves and some vampires are just downright creepy and scary. And Serial Killers are the scariest kind of monsters out there because they hide their monstrosity behind human faces.
The scariest monster that I’ve ever seen is that scary mother from Alien. That thing was freaking scary.
The scariest monster for me was the character in costume for the movie “Scream”. I still cannot see that mask without being creeped out.
For me the scariest “monster” of all time would have to be serial killer Hannibal the Cannibal.
For me my scary monster is kinda of different. I would probably say Cujo. I cannot look at a St. Bernard the same way after watching that movie.
Oooh you have me drooling over the mere thought of Phantom from The Phantom of teh Opera. I’m not really into horror movies, they get too suggestive to my mind
Win I was young my Mom took us to the driven to see down of the Dead.I was about seven or eight and I tell you I had night mares of dead people walking around Eating people for about a year.now days the movie does not scare me much but taking a little kid to see it was not my moms best idea.now days I think the scaryest Monsters are people.

I avoid scary movies and try to screne out any icky pictures. That said I love Vampires and the new Wolfman movie looks tragic.
Definitely Dracula as well as Sully from Monsters Inc.
I definitely think Hannibal Lecter…I had nightmares for a real long time after seeing those movies…all the more scary because like you said he could be real. Gives me the chills just thinking about it!
Rutger Hauer from the original Hitcher movie-he scared me silly because that could happen. Real type is always scarier that fictional creatures.
I have a serious thing for vampires. 🙂 And let’s not forget the Mummy, and the Phantom of the Opera. And I’d love to see someone remake Cat People with a hot guy instead of a woman.
I totally agree with Angela. My very first thought was Cujo. I lost a little sleep after reading that story.
Some of the creepiest vampires ever were the ones from 30 Days of Night, not sexy at all. lol
I loved Pinhead as well as the rest of the Cenobites. Clive Barker sure knows how to tell a story.
What about scary face from Scream? The anonymous factor would creep me out, the fact that it could be anybody.
Just a few that came to mind.

The vampire bunch from the original Salem’s Lot movie scared the heck out of me! I still get creeped out when I think about the little boy vampire floating outside his friend’s bedroom window. He kept tapping on the glass to be let inside…tapping…tapping…tapping…
Hello. Very interesting Blog. Not really what i have searched over Google, but thanks for the information.
