Writing, Interrupted Back to Blog
Ah, holiday magic. Such a busy time. Presents to wrap. Gifts to buy so you can do that wrapping.
Busy.
Life interrupts my writing schedule a lot during the holidays. Just one of those things. I’m trying to stay on track right now–I’m into my revising/polishing stage with the story I’m calling I’LL BE SLAYING YOU (my latest paranormal). Instead of a daily page count with this one, I’m setting up daily work time requirements–i.e., I’ll edit/revise for 3 hours today and 3 hours tomorrow. Sunday is a break day for me b/c my son turns 3 (3!!!!) and we get to enjoy birthday party madness. But I’ll be back to work on Monday because I’m determined to finish up this book by next Friday.
You see…I want to start another story. Always, another story. But if I’m not writing (and I classify my writing as a whole other beast from my revising b/c the process is so different), then I just feel…kinda lost. I need to write to keep my mind busy; otherwise, I just seem to flounder about. So I need to write.
Last year, I just pretty much wrote off (ha) the month of December. I knew life would be crazy and productivity would be next to nothing. But this year–no, I want to write. Before the new year comes, I could write a novella or churn out a good 200 pages on a new story.
But what about the other writers out there? Are you finding your writing has been interrupted by the festivities? And if you’re not a writer, how about your reading schedule? I’ve been trying to get my pleasure reads in, but my time for reading has dwindled–okay, disappeared. (That means my TBR stack is just growing and growing…)

It’s been difficult for me to find time to read. I like to read in bed at night, but lately I’ve been too tired. Between the decorating, shopping, Christmas parties, etc., I’m worn out and we still have almost 2 weeks to go.
Anna won Midnight Sins…it was a big hit at Dirty Santa last night!
I’m trying to keep up with the writing. Not doing as well as I want to, but kind of a steady crawl. This Sunday, I’m having my husband’s family over, so I’m cleaning and shopping today. Tomorrow I’m cooking and baking. Sunday I hope I’ll be relaxed and with not much to do except warm up food and enjoy myself. 🙂 But I am going to make time to write each day, even if it’s just a few pages.
Hi Cynthia!
I feel your pain. My reading is put totally on the back burner during the month of December. Between trying to meet holiday commitments and working overtime at my day job, it gets pretty stressful. I enjoy blogging too and writing reviews but that is going to have to go by the wayside until January.
With each passing year, I become more relieved when Christmas is all over and I can actually enjoy a little quiet reading time.
All the best to you and yours for the festive season Cynthia! 🙂
I’ve had so many extra errands this month that is has interrupted my reading time. I can’t wait for some quiet time soon.
Totally. December’s always the same. Writing gets interrupted, or feels like it’s slowed to a crawl. It’s why I’ve decided to spend this month revising and note-taking.
There’s a new novel that desperately wants to be written, but I’m trying to put it off until next year. Lol. And you know how hard that is. Lol. A story just won’t shut up when it’s ready to go. At least I keep getting distracted by other ones as well.
Happy Birthday to your son! I hope you all have a lovely day.
Oh, my reading time has definitely been cut into by the holidays. The first weekend of December is always my family’s Christmas open house, so I spend the time between Thanksgiving and that weekend helping my parents get everything ready. After that, I’m usually getting ready for my annual trip to Virginia to visit my aunt and cousin. This is only the second year in the last 7 that I haven’t gone and I’m feeling a little sad about it. Now I’ll need to cut into my reading time so I can finish my Christmas shopping and then help my mom with all the wrapping (except for my gifts from her and my dad).
Cindy, this year is different for me and I’m thrilled! I’m not putting my writing on the back burner for the holidays, and I’m focused on moving forward. I was scheduled, than slacked off, and now back on track.
I think you’re one of the most prolific writers around. I love that, always working on something, finishing a project, starting something new. You go, girl!
And happy b-day to your precious son too! Give him some sugars for me. 🙂
Hi Cynthia! Just saw the covers and blurbs to IMMORTAL DANGER and MIDNIGHT MASTERS. We have so much to look forward to from you! I can’t tell you how excited I am! Is I’LL BE SLAYING YOU a novel for Brava? I always wondered what you would do when writing one book and having all these thoughts of other books and how to be able to get that all down so you don’t lose it! Happy b’day to your son!
Thanks for writing all you do! Know its appreciated. Do take the time for you too! hugs Cathie
