Torn in 2 Directions Back to Blog
Okay, I’m feeling torn. I have two story ideas that are calling to me. Two very different ideas. One is for a fun, contemporary romance (on the racy side), and the other is a dark paranormal–very dark. I want to write them both, truly I do, but I just can’t decide which to do first.
For the writers out there–does this ever happen to you? Do you get 2 (or more) completely different ideas? And if so, how do you decide which to write? I think I’m going to sit in front of the computer–one hour today, one hour tomorrow. I’ll give each story its own hour. And perhaps, well, perhaps one story will flow faster for me. Easier. I’ll just have to wait and see. Fun and light, or dark and tortured…oh, decisions.

I have that problem right now, so I’m writing both 🙂 I do tend to be spending more time on the one than the other, but if I get stuck, I switch to the other ms and it seems to work. My real problem is that over the weekend I got a great idea for a novella. I almost feel like dropping everything and writing it, as it will be much quicker to finish. So far, I’ve resisted the temptation, though.
Thanks, Michelle, your comment makes me feel much better! I wrote a little on each story–and the dark paranormal seemed to flow much faster, so I think I’m going to work on that one for now. If I get stuck, I’ll take your advice and switch back.
Good luck with your stories…and good luck with resisting temptation! 🙂
I’ve been there. The most important thing for me was to get them both doewn in outline form before they escapedme, then see which one was more detailed. 🙂
I didn’t resist 🙁 I started it yesterday and I already have 5 pages. So many ideas, so few hours in the day.
I’m writing one book that I’m excited about — and last week I got an idea for a nonfiction book. Because I think the nonfiction book is more timely, I stopped my ficiton book to concentrate on it. Hopefully I’ll have a query ready to send to agents by the end of the week.
Thanks for the advice, Saskia!
Michelle–gave into temptation, huh? Good luck with your novella!
Edie–I completely understand the importance of timeliness! Best of luck with your query.
