30 Days of Demons: Day 7, Are Demons the New Black? Back to Blog
Update: Thanks for all the comments, everyone! I really enjoyed reading your take on the rise of demons in paranormal romances.
The winner from this post is…commenter #6, ! Congrats, Tamsyn T! I’ll email you with prize details.
As I walked through the bookstore yesterday (I’d gotten a gift card for my birthday, and, of course, I had to spend it immediately), my eyes were caught by an assortment of books–demon books. Now, don’t get me wrong, I was pleased to see the demon stories, especially since I have my own demon book coming out in just a few weeks! Seeing all these books made me think…oh, yeah, demons must be “in” right now.
Any idea why? I mean, I like the demon stories because I’m a sucker for bad boys, especially the bad ones that you want to redeem. And you can’t get more “bad” than a demon, and if you want to talk about redemption–yep, demons. That’s why I enjoy the demons, but what about you? Why do you like the demon novels?
And do you think demons are the new black? Are they the next popular wave of paranormal characters? Will they possibly dethrone the paranormal champs, the vamps?
Let me know what you think, and you could win one of these demon books that I saw on my recent bookstore travels (I’ll ship the book to you via Amazon.com):

Yeah, it must be the bad boy thing.
Hi Cynthia! I hope you had an awesome birthday :)!! Don’t you just love gift cards??
I have Passion Unleashed, it is a rockin Demon novel. Wraith is so sexy in it.
I love vamps always have, but I must say demons are working their way to the top too on paranormal favs.
I agree I think it is the whole bad boy tough guy thing, the lone and myterious arua, and the idea of redemption and them having a good caring heart under those layers.
I love my demons, and am so glad that there are more books featuring them, but I don’t think they will ever dethrone the vamps 🙂
yeah, I really like demons and I think it is great that they are gaining popularity but I think especially now they would not become more popular than vampires with all the twilight frenzy
I think demons are awesome and I love the stories about them too, but vampires are still on the top of my list since I’ve read a lot more vampire books than demon books.
Everyone loves a badass hero and you can’t get badder than a demon! I wouldn’t say that they would become ‘the thing’ though but ONE of the favourites among paranormals such as werewolves, vampires, shapeshifters, et al.:o)
I love demon stories, but I don’t think they’ll topple the vamp frenzy yet. Too much New Moon and True Blood promotion going on right now to think of anything else.
Hi Cynthia~
I hope you had a great birthday. I think that demons are on the rise right now and I love a good demon story (and yes, it must have something to do with that redeemable bad boy thing), but I am not sure they will overtake the vamp stories yet. But, I definitely have room for both…my bookcase might not, but I do.
Demon books are definetely the new black! I love them! Bring them on. 🙂
I have to agree with the others. Demons are on the rise in popularity. It may be close, with them coming in a tie or second to vamps. Though personally I’d be voting on the demons over vamps.
I can’t wait to read Fox’s books (they should be coming) and I already read Ione’s books. They were Awesome! And I have McCray’s book coming because it has drows!
I love the fact demons are the new bad boys for me. Don’t get me wrong I still love vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, etc. Have a great day.
Everyone loves bad boys and demons are the ultimate bad boy. I don’t think that demons will dethrone the vamps but it might be close. I hope you had a wonderful birthday and a great weekend.
Those demon stories are getting pretty popular. I really enjoy them and I think it’s the lure of redeeming a bad boy. It seems that in these kind of stories, when they fall, they fall hard and fast!!! and boy, do those bad boys get big and bad between the sheets….hehe!!!
Valerie
I love demon books, bad boys are my favorites, but…I do love vamps and shifters too!
I think vampires stories are still popular but I think people want a change but still have a bad boy character and demon stories fit that bill.So I do think demon books are becoming more popular.
Hi Cynthia,
Happy belated birthday and I hope you had a great one!
Glad to hear that demon books are becoming more popular but but I’m still into vamps, werewolves, shapeshifters, etc.
I enjoy reading about demons, got love them bad boys. We all need a change off from the vamps a werewolves, so demons are a great change.
Now there is nothing better than a giftcard for a present 😀
But why they are so in, I have no idea, we all do love a good bad boy. And perhaps we are a tiny, only a tiny bit tired of vampires, and need some demon lovin
I love demons because you never know what to expect with them! A vampire is a vampire – they all pretty much have similar characteristics and their is only so much you can do with them. Demons on the other hand – well there are a bizillion different types out there and they can all be different so you never completely know what to expect.
I enjoy all the paranormal characters – I love it when an author thinks outside the box and comes up with a character that is not normally thought of as a good candidate for a hero – so the advent of demons as the love interest is fun.
Hmmm… not the new black, I don’t think. I do think that in the hands of skilled writers, demons can be heroic, villainous, and everything in between.
It goes always back to the writing.
I’m into demons and all but they never be like vamps to me.
I think demons are great – but not the new black. They kind of make me think of the forbidden, but they’re not quite as seductive (yet) as vampires.
Hi Cynthia!
I hope you had a great birthday! I think that gift cards are the best present ever.
My first love are definitely vampires, but demons are working theri way into my heart. It must be the whole bad boy thing with a lot of mistery. We girls just love an idea a good heart under all that tough facade that beats just for us:)
I love demons, but not sure if they are the “in” thing now. Like the vampires, and shapeshifters too.
I love paranormals. I’m not tired of vampires and werecreatures etc. that have been in spotlight for a while already, but it’s always nice to see new mythologies being used and created. I’ve met demon characters before, but now they’re even more visible, especially in the hero role.
Since I love my bad boys, I am really enjoying the new storylines that are coming out for demons. Stories with more of a dark hero totally work for me. I can’t see them replacing vamps, but giving us some different kinds of heroes that we haven’t seen before is refreshing.
I have to agree that demons are creating their own path to becoming equal in popularity with vamps.
There’s so much more variation and complex issues involved, other than just being sexy bad boys struggling internally with good/bad emotions, yearning for completion to their half souls, etc. Plus, its a big sigh of relief when we find our favorite demon as a wonderful hero.
But being the new Black– I don’t think so. I agree, too, that they’re forbidden.
I have a fascination with demon books, but I don’t think my love for vampires will ever diminish.
As with any other increase in offerings, a few editors trying to predict the new trend noticed demon books were selling and probably started to ask for submissions. Just like all the UF with a first person female perspective showed up in the last 2 years.
Still I love the demons because there can be so much variation and redemption when connected to the heroine is always possible.
No, I think it’s just a phase, Cynthia. Demons are something new and trendy. I think the market will settle down. I love vamps. I think there’s a sensuality there that’s existed since Bram Stoker’s Dracula and through various movies. Vamps rule! Hope you had a great birthday!

Gotta say, I love the whole demon idea myself. I don’t know, they just are so deliciously naughty!
Dont’ get me wrong, I love vamps and werewolves but I do like demons too.
Guess it’s the whole bad boy thing huh?? 🙂
Hi Cynthia
No I don’t think the vamps have anything to worry about yet, though if many stories of demons such as yours keep popping up they will give the vamps a run for their #1 spot!
I’ve read the first two books by these authors in their series and can’t wait to read their latest releases! My favorites are vampires but the demon reads are closing in!
I definitely think demons are on the rise, but that goes for books about other paranormal creatures as well. Just paranormals books in general have been on the rise. But no, I don’t think they’re giving vamps a run for their money just yet. Vampires are like the mascot for the paranormal. So I don’t think they have anything to worry about just yet.
I don’t know if the ‘demon’ idea will ever top the vampires and shapeshifters, but I love them all! I enjoy these types of stories because the heroes/heroines are always so unique because of their various abilities instead of just the usual romance or suspense story. I like the villians as they are generally so evil and ‘bad to the bone’ and now some even turn into the heroes…love those. Keep up the terrific stories as we love reading them.
Hey Ms. Eden!! 😀
LOVE LOVE LOVE demons!! I totally don’t think it’s just a fad though, it’s something new and I think it’s here to stay. i totally agree with the above people who say it’s the allure of the forbidden or the bad boy image.
I really love that demons’ have become so popular but I don’t think they’ll replace vampires or shapeshifters. I actually like the demons better than vampires so hopefully demon stories are here to stay.
I haven’t read many demon stories, but I do enjoy them so it’s a good thing they’re gaining popularity. Not sure if they’ll dethrone the vamps yet.
I agree i do like a badass sexy demon, but it will not outweigh the sexiness of a shapeshifter. vampire possibly.
I think demons must be the new thing. I haven’t read any books with demons yet, but I like the bad boy thing & will be reading some soon.
I think Demons are becoming very popular. Mostly because they are supposedly “evil and not redeemable”. Plus, they’re expected to be bad. I hope you had a Wonderful Birthday!
Hmmm, the new black? Not sure… don’t get me wrong I love to have a bad boy demon who redeems himself just enough, but I don’t think demons will take over the paranormal world anytime soon. Think vamps still have a bigger stake in that 😀 And right behind them shifters…
the hot but not yet as hot as a vampire put they may some day get there then there’s the werewolfs that are hot to.all paranormal is hot wright now.
sasluvbooks@yahoo.com
I think they’re both hot. For me, it’s the story, the characters and the writers. I’d get bored reading the same thing all the time.
Let’s here it for Demons – All the way in my opinion they are Romances new hero. Don’t get me wrong – vampires are okay – but they can only come out at night. While demons – yes they are Bad Boys and the sunlight doesn’t kill them 🙂
I think there are so many books to read because it is a new way to go with romances and it keeps things fresh and new. I also really enjoy the way different authors look at demons and the different takes on them. I think it really makes the books very interesting.
Happy Birthday, Cynthia. I like those bad-boy demons, but still want my seductive vamps and other shifters – I like the variety.
Like you I enjoy demons in books because while still being a quote, unquote “Good Guy” in the books, the characters that pull off being the best bad boys are demons. They come with a bad reputation, an evil lineage, and unholy powers. Playing with fire? Thats not just a saying around a demon.
I agree that demons are becoming popular in books recently. Will they eclipse the vampires? I don’t think so but they could give the vampires a run for their money.
Hope you had an awesome Birthday and got all that you wanted and then some.
I think they are. I’m seeing more and more demon books.
