30 Days of Demons: Day 7, Are Demons the New Black? Back to Blog

Update:  Thanks for all the comments, everyone! I really enjoyed reading your take on the rise of demons in paranormal romances.
The winner from this post is…commenter #6, !  Congrats, Tamsyn T!  I’ll email you with prize details.

As I walked through the bookstore yesterday (I’d gotten a gift card for my birthday, and, of course, I had to spend it immediately), my eyes were caught by an assortment of books–demon books.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I was pleased to see the demon stories, especially since I have my own demon book coming out in just a few weeks! Seeing all these books made me think…oh, yeah, demons must be “in” right now.

Any idea why?  I mean, I like the demon stories because I’m a sucker for bad boys, especially the bad ones that you want to redeem.  And you can’t get more “bad” than a demon, and if you want to talk about redemption–yep, demons.  That’s why I enjoy the demons, but what about you?  Why do you like the demon novels?

And do you think demons are the new black?  Are they the next popular wave of paranormal characters?  Will they possibly dethrone the paranormal champs, the vamps?

Let me know what you think, and you could win one of these demon books that I saw on my recent bookstore travels (I’ll ship the book to you via Amazon.com):

I like the demon books the same reason you do, Cynthia. Demons truly are the ultimate bad boys, and they’re beyond flawed, so it’s much more ok for everyone else to be a little bad. That, and yes, the redemption thing. I mean, when a damned creature is trying to be good? The struggle? Gripping.

Happy belated – I hope it was wonderful, and that you had lots of cake and ice cream 🙂

I think that interest in demons may have picked up lately because there is just so much you can do with them! I know a lot of people associate demons with Christian notions of hell, but actually there are demons in many different mythologies and belief systems and not all of them are evil. I’d like to see authors play around with the Ravana demons from the HIndu epics, for example.
    Cool selection of books!

I really do think they are getting more popular and will one day tie with the shifters for popularity but I dont think they will ever overtake the vamps.

great birthday prezzie there. And yeah I think demons are being to be new black in paranormals Lovely bunch of books there. I read Larissa Ione and that whole series rocks. I’m just mad cause the hotel I work at don’t have sexy demons and weres working there at least not where I can see them lol. The other two are on my wish list.

Oh I’ve been looking forward to Chey McCray’s book! The other two I have and yum!! Once I got into Demon’s, it was all the more unique themes to write! Like I loved your Succubus in your book and now I’d love to read a theme like that! And the same went for Demon and so glad they have them! Too you so can’t get more bad than a demon, but too you never know!!

    Happy birthday!!

  6. Jacqueline L. says:

Yep, I think they’re the new black but I don’t think they’ll ever beat out the vamps!

  7. I think what makes the whole demon package so intriguing to a lot of heroines and readers – besides the bad boy thing – is the chance for redemption. Nine times out of ten, these stories are about the demons somehow redeeming themselves. I love these kinds of stories almost as much as underdog stories because most times it’s the heroine who brings him around. I wouldn’t say we like to “tame” the bad boys…because then we wouldn’t love them so much to begin with. I think it’s more the fact that he’ll go to Hades to save his woman. When demons start going romantic, I get weak in the knees 😉

I think my friends and I had a discussion about this once. I think the consensus we reached is that some ideas generally get spread around a lot more than others like vampires and werewolves. I mean we all love demons (go Buffy!) and we all secretly love bad boys, so it’s not very surprising to see the combination cropping up. Just my two cents worth.

Honestly? I think paranormal books are on the rise as a whole. I don’t think demons will over take vampires but it will certainly give them a run for the money. I loved Passion Unleashed and am actually in the middle of The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers. I like the cover of Demons Not Included.

Demons might be hot stuff, but I don’t think they will replace the sizzling vamps!

I DO think Demons are “in”. I’m not sure if they’ll dethrone the vamps, but for us paranormal lovers, it’s a new concept to explore, and we’re gobbling up everything that is out there~~and luckily, some awesome authors have written about Demons, so we’re HOOKED!!
The first Demon I read was a few years ago, Surviving Demon Island by Jaci Burton. Love it, loved the idea that Demons aren’t all bad, and have been buying Demon books ever since.

  13. Jamie Birdwell says:

Happy belated B-Day!! Yes I think Demons are the new black. How could they not be. They are sexy, HOT Bad boys!! Don’t get me wrong I LOVE my vamps but I have plenty of room in my heart for both.

  14. Hope you had a good birthday. Hubs b-day was Friday and mine was 2 weeks ago and our anniv is in 2 weeks (not to mention mother’s day and father’s day) May/June are busy months around our house.

I love Angie Fox’s series and she is the nicest person ever. She hosted a party at Bitten by Books and had over 1200 posts. The series is good, the demon slayer finds out she’s a demon slayer on her 30th bday with no warning or anything. Grannie shows up with a Pink Harley. They are a hoot.

I also love Cheyenne McCray and can’t wait to read her new series and I’ve heard that Larissa Ione’s is a really good series too.

  15. Ilona says:

    Belated Happy Birthday Cynthia.

Personally I think paranormal heroes go in phases – first it was all werewolves, then came the vampires and now it’s the turn of the demons. However the werewolves and the vampires are still around so they will never be completely discarded.

I love them all and can’t wait for the next paranormal hero to hit the shelves (Gargoyles or Satyrs maybe?)

  16. Sej says:

Definitely! I’ve been seeing a wave after wave of demon books hitting the shelves. I’m drowning in it!! Happily I might add… I’m still waiting for the furistics to be the new black. I mean come on, Star Trek anyone?? Or better yet a Futuristic Demon novel? Any author can take that idea and go with it!! I mean Demons gotta travel too right?? 😛

  17. Barb Patrick says:

Hi Cynthia! I just think that readers like a switch every once in a while, even if it’s from vampires to demons. Frankly, it really doesn’t matter to me because I try to read them all! But I do agree that Demons seem to be very popular lately, and that’s okay by me. Can’t wait for Midnight’s Master!!!!!

  18. Marie says:

Demons are everywhere these days! But I love bad boys, so I’m not complaining 🙂
